CATHY VAN GOMPEL
Our beloved mom, Cathy Van Gompel, passed away on December 9, 2025.
Mom was predeceased by Dad, Fred Van Gompel (2020), and Daughter, Barb Levenick (2019). Leaving to mourn her passing are Rob (Janet), Dave (Lori), Greg (Val) and son-in-law Brian, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and niece Maryanne (Joe), with whom she shared a significant connection, numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was born in Breda Netherlands on November 1, 1932, to Johannes and Maria, one of six children and the last surviving of the siblings. The entire family emigrated to Canada in 1948, working on a farm in St Eustache until they could make their own way. Farm life wasn’t for Mom, she packed up and headed into the big city with her sister Jean to make her own way, working many jobs through her years, most enjoyably Gold Brick Jewelers in Garden City Mall. She would often been seen on her daily walk from home to the mall, winding down Airlies and chatting with neighbours on the way - Dad would drive to the mall to meet mom and friends for coffee. Other pastimes included knitting and crocheting, reading and cheering on her Jets.
Mom and Dad met in the summer of 1958 and were married the following summer, welcoming four beautiful children, the source of much joy. Camping was a favorite activity when the kids were young and continued through their years together - Falcon Lake, Komarno, Spruce Sands - they made friends everywhere they went. Mom was profoundly proud of us kids and loved to hear about our challenges and accomplishments.
Mom and Dad travelled to Bladel for their 50th anniversary, a trip they enjoyed with Barb and Brian. They often travelled to Calgary to visit with Barb until her passing in 2019, we all felt a piece of them went with their special girl with the boys trying to fill the void that was left in their hearts.
Mom could always be counted on when anyone needed help - whether it be picking potatoes, chores or an extra hand with nieces and nephews - a phone call and she would be on the way.
Thank you to the staff of River Ridge II for their care and friendship during her four year residence. Thank you to Dr Abbott, Brian and Unit 4 staff of Seven Oaks hospital for their care in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
