JOSEPHINE CICCOCIOPPO

(nee GANCZAR)

June 2, 1947 - January 5, 2026

Josephine Ciccocioppo (nee Ganczar) passed away peacefully at the River East Personal Care Home on January 5, 2026, with her eldest daughter at her side.

She leaves behind daughters, Anna-Lisa and Susan; grandsons, Jack, Myles and Carter; sister, Elizabeth Waroway; brother, Andrew Ganczar (Kim); sister-in-law Maria Paolucci (Gino); and many nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carmine; parents, William and Pauline Ganczar (nee Kucherawy); brother-in-law Dennis Waroway; brother and sister-in-law Tonino and Martha Ciccocioppo.

Jo was born on June 2, 1947, in Dauphin, Manitoba. She grew up on the family farm in nearby Valley River and moved to Winnipeg to complete her nurses' training through Victoria General Hospital in 1969 and became a Registered Nurse. She married Carmine in 1970, and they had two daughters, Anna-Lisa and Susan. Jo was devoted to her family, while also dedicating herself to her profession.

Jo worked at Deer Lodge Centre, then at the new Concordia Hospital in various nursing roles from the mid 1970s until her retirement in 2014. She also worked casually at the River East Personal Care Home in the 1990s, the place that would become her final residence. She became a wound care specialist later in her career. She was known for her hard work and dedication to her patients and would often get approached by patients from decades ago who remembered her and thanked her for her care. Following retirement, she continued using her nursing skills in the care of her husband Carmine until his passing in 2017.

Jo loved being Baba to Carter, Jack and Myles, and was so proud of them. She enjoyed hosting the kids for Sunday dinners and spoiling them for as long as she was able. After her retirement she enjoyed meeting her colleagues from Concordia for coffee. She also enjoyed baking, especially during the Christmas season. One of her favorite pastimes was attending concerts and listening to music like the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. She was thoughtful, with a wonderful sense of humour, and loved sending people funny greeting cards.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the staff at both the Poseidon Care Centre and the River East Personal Care Home for the excellent care they gave Jo.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church, with Father Sam Argenziano officiating. Cremation has taken place. Condolences will be offered starting one hour before the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully encourages donations to the Concordia Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
