Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY ANNE REIMER
With sadness her family announces the passing of Shirley Anne Reimer (nee Rieger) on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the age of 81years, after a courageous five-year struggle with ALS.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband Arnold, son Michael and his wife Katherine, daughter Dana, sister Sylvia Epp (Mel), sister Deanna Bohun, sisters-in-law, Nettie Reimer and Mary Reimer (Peter), as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. Shirley was predeceased by parents, Sebastian and Katherine Rieger, parents-in-law, John C. and Mary Reimer, and seven brothers and sisters-in-law.
Shirley was born and raised in Steinbach, Manitoba. She was baptized and became a member of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church, and attended Steinbach Collegiate, where she met her high school sweetheart, Arnold. They were married in Steinbach in 1963, and moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba, where Arnold was teaching. In June of 1964 the young couple moved to Winnipeg, and soon proudly welcomed son Michael and daughter Dana. Shortly thereafter Shirley met Susan Hoplock, who became her life-long friend and soul sister.
While still raising her family Shirley joined the workforce, spending most of her working life in business accounting. Starting as a bank teller, Shirley later held accounting positions with J. Hansen & Son Plumbing Ltd., Western Supplies Ltd., and Lawton Partners. She concluded her working career at Assiniboine Clinic. During her working years Shirley made many life-long friends. Prominent among these were the fun-loving "Western Supplies Girls".
In her leisure time, Shirley’s most loved places were Robert’s Lodge on Lake of the Woods; and Santa Rosa, California - a fine base from which to connect with Michael and Katherine in San Francisco. And there were memorable travels with dear friends including a trip to Europe, a winter in Arizona, a cruise to Alaska, and a tour of Newfoundland.
Despite her own health challenges, Shirley consistently showed empathy for others in difficulty. She had a big, generous heart. The family is grateful for the joy Shirley brought us for so many years. Through today’s tears shines the light of her glorious smile!
The family expresses gratitude to Dr. Fathihelabad and the ALS/MND team at Deer Lodge Hospital, to Diana Rasmussen and the staff of the ALS Society, to the staff of both the WRHA Home Care and Palliative Care departments, to the home care aides from Home Instead, and to the staff of the Riverview Hospital Palliative Care wing for their caring support.
The family also thanks Chapel Lawn Funeral Home staff for helping to arrange Shirley’s "Celebration of Life" memorial service, which will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the ALS Society of Manitoba, or to a charity of your choice.

Though we only got to meet Arnold and Shirley after their move to Roblin Grove we very early learned of a couple deeply in love and dedicated to each other. Shirley despite a very difficult medical condition always had a smile when we saw her. Arnold could not do enough to keep Shirley comfortable. He is always positive and appreciative of the small things others could do to help. Our very deepest sympathy to you Arnold and your family. We are out of country at this time and will not be able to participate in the celebration of life. Our hearts will be with you on that day. May she rest in peace. Shirley was a dear friend who will be deeply missed. She was a kind and thoughtful friend who always put others first, and was always so much fun to be around. Whether it was our girls' weekends or our close group of friends gathering at her house or at Ginny's, those moments together were truly the best of times. As the eldest of our group, (she wouldn't like me saying that) Shirley had a way of keeping us on the straight and narrow, always offering guidance and wisdom when we needed it. But she also knew how to bring the fun to the party — laughter always followed wherever she went. Her warmth, spirit, and friendship will remain in our hearts forever. Deepest sympathies to Arn, Michael (Catherine) and Dana - she LOVED and was very proud of her family. We will miss you Shirl ❤️ - Posted by: Kathy Burke (Friend) on: Jan 24, 2026
