SCHURKO-CAMARA
Barbara Ann Schurko-Camara, age 63, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025. Born in Winnipeg on July 30, 1961, Barbara lived her life exactly as she wanted—boldly, beautifully, and always with unmistakable flair.
Barbara’s personality was truly larger than life. She was known for being impeccably dressed each and every day—always “to the nines.” She adored all things designer, and her home (and her seven closets!) were a testament to her passion for style, elegance, and the art of putting together the perfect look. Barbara didn’t just decorate—she curated. Whether it was her outfits or her living space, she had a gift for creating beauty and making a statement.
Barbara attended Garden City Collegiate, leaving in 1978. She had various sales positions in Garden City Shopping Centre. She then moved on to Glazerman Furs. She later joined Ben Moss Jewellers at Polo Park, where she became a respected manager, admired for her professionalism, confidence, and strong presence. Sadly, illness forced Barbara to retire far earlier than she deserved.
Barbara had a deep love for animals, especially her pet dogs and birds. She shared a special bond with her African Grey parrot, Bismarke, known for his big personality (and his feather-plucking quirks). Barbara’s devotion to her pets was unwavering—so much so that she was featured in the Winnipeg Free Press after challenging a city bylaw that limited how many small dogs she could keep. She stood her ground, as Barbara always did.
Barbara was predeceased by her father, William “Bill” Schurko, her mother, Bernice Schurko, and her beloved Baba, Ann Nippor, with whom she shared a very close relationship. She was also deeply loved by her husband, Manuel Camara, who sadly passed away in 2025, just months after Barbara’s passing.
Barbara was an only child and had no children of her own, but her life was rich with meaningful relationships. She leaves to mourn her cherished friends Barbara, Carol Anne, and Paula Gunn; her step-son Paul Camara and his wife Melanie; and countless others.
A special thank you goes out to Father Isidore of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church for his frequent visits and many prayers over her 41-day stay at the St. Boniface Hospital.
As per Barbara’s wishes, cremation took place, and she was laid to rest with her parents and grandmother in a small private service.
Barbara will be remembered for her sparkle, her strength, her love of beauty, and the unforgettable presence she brought into every room. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
