Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCalum Tomas Jensen
Our much beloved Calum died in our arms after sustaining an intracranial hemorrhage due to the unexpected development of severe Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura.
Calum was raised in Brandon, Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, and graduated from McGill University (B.Mus. and M.Mus. - Composition) and SUNY at Stony Brook (Masters in Critical Music Studies). Calum was undertaking his PhD in Music History (Musicology) at the University of Chicago at the time of his passing, living with his beloved Christina, a fellow PhD student in Music History. Although new to Musicology, Calum had quickly made his mark with podium presentations at The American Musicological Society, co-chairing AMS working groups and his scholarship on spectral music and aesthetics. Many individuals think, as an eminent American Musicologist with whom Calum co-chaired a working-group wrote. “In all my years in this profession, I have not encountered a more promising scholar, a more thoughtful interlocuter, a more generous collaborator.” Calum’s loss to the Musicology world, and that of his family and friends, will be immense. A fine, principled man, filled with love, ever in search of meaning and truth, empathic and self-aware, he elevated many, through giving so generously of himself, while rigorously undertaking his scholarship. Calum elevated us, and our memories of him will elevate us.
Calum is survived by his beloved partner Christina Colanduoni, and her family cherished sister Sheila, beloved parents, Chris and Fiona, many loving aunts and devoted uncles, beloved cousins Arden, and Rebecca, Amanda, Louisa and Margaret, and their partners and children, Winnipeg friends and many far-flung collaborators, and associates, in Composition, Musicology, Philosophy and Aesthetics. He was predeceased by his much loved, and loving, grandparents, Christian and Margaret Jensen and Will and Ruth McAlpin.
A Memorialization of Calum with the Department of Music took place on February 16 in Fulton Hall in the Goodspeed Building at the University of Chicago. A Celebration of Calum’s life will be undertaken at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday March 29, at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG), with a streaming link.
The family is deeply grateful for the care provided to Calum by Dr T. Fan’s medical team and the nursing staff, especially Crystal, in the Neuro-ICU at the University of Chicago Hospital’s Centre for Care and Discover. You may visit www.ChapelC.com to leave remembrances and photographs and to view photographs and photomontages. Links will be provided at www.ChapelC.com to stream Calum’s Celebration of Life and to donate to Calum’s legacy of music inquiry and supporting scholars in need. The family declines flowers.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. I went to U of M jazz studies program with Calum in 2012/2013 and I remember his humour, his intensity, and his love for music. He pushed all of us to be better musicians, and he shone in our year as the example to which we were held. I also had the privilege of connecting with him when I lived in Montreal, and he was just as interesting and interested then as he was at school. What a deep loss this is to all who knew him, and all who were robbed of the privilege to know him in future. My sincere condolences to his family, please know he will be remembered with affection by all his friends. - Posted by: Emily Kidd (University friend) on: Feb 23, 2026

Fiona, Chris, and Sheila, I was so devastated and heartbroken to learn about Calum and I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't think I can put into words how much he means to me and how upset and sad I am. It was such a privilege to grow up alongside him and share so much time in elementary, middle, and high school together. I have so many great memories with him over the years including band trips, countless musical performances and rehearsals, our high school graduation, visiting him in Montreal, and many afternoons spent at your house with him after school. I'm so lucky that I was able to call him one of my best friends, he was like a brother to me. I'll always be thinking of him, and I'll always remember how brilliant, talented, and ambitious he was, and what a great person you raised him to be. I'm so sorry for all of you, I still can't believe it. My whole family sends their condolences, we're all thinking of you. Evan Yuel - Posted by: Evan Yuel (Friend) on: Feb 22, 2026
