It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Bethune who passed away peacefully at Poseidon Care Centre in Winnipeg.
Susan was predeceased by her parents, James Godfrey Fulford (Denis) Feilde and Cecilia Wallace Campbell, and by her brother James Campbell Feilde.
Susan is survived by her husband, Edwin Bethune, her sons, James Gary Feilde Buchanan of Winnipeg and Robert Andrew McLean Buchanan and his wife Carmen of St. Albert, AB, grandchildren, Mason, Lukas, and Ryleigh Buchanan of St. Albert, AB, and her cousin Sanny Nutter of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Susan was born in Toronto, but her family moved to Winnipeg when she was six months old, and she grew up in Winnipeg. She lived in St. Catherines, Oshawa, and five years in Australia, but returned to Winnipeg in 1976 and always considered herself to be a Winnipeger.
Susan was very devoted to her family, and she devoted herself to raising her children. When the children were older Susan obtained a certificate in Business Accountancy from Red River College. She obtained her dream job when she began working for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. She worked in the Dean's Office, but, because of her keen interest in history, what she loved best was working in the Faculty of Medicine Archives. Susan worked to reorganize the archives and computerize the inventory databases. She published one article in Manitoba Medicine and contributed extensive research to two others.
Susan had a keen interest in family history, and was able to trace some of her ancestors back to 1567. In fact, she met her second husband, Edwin, while taking a course in genealogical research at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. But she didn't just create charts of ancestors, she wanted to know the stories of people. She made many trips to the USA, UK and Australia visiting relatives and browsing through libraries and archives to further her family history research.
A celebration of Susan's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 2, 2026 at Unitarian Universalist Church, 603 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg.
