• There I was, shy and yet engrossed in Mr. Scaletta's class. I wasn't a big reader but I loved poetry and the assignments we were given stimulated me enough to follow through as a Journalist and a writer. I was fortunate to see Sam and Carla several times in the past 10 years. One time, four of us went to Maximes. I gave Sam some writings, as I now belonged to a seniors writing group. I asked him to do his homework, to read them and mark outside his comments. Sure enough he did, in red pen, and sent them back. Since then I have had a continuing career in journalism and must give him credit for the engagement in his classroom. Not often do we find a mentor like Sam was for me. Or a kinder, most understanding teacher as he was. I am so happy to have shared , albeit some of the hardest years of his life with him and Carla. My heart is sad, but my memories fill up the spaces. Sam will surely be missed, may the Lord Jesus open the Gates of Heaven and welcome him home.
