Constance (Connie) Lynn Geekie (nee Hjorleifson), born December 6, 1948, quietly passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the age of 77 years.
Connie’s early years were spent with her parents, Gladys and Oscar; brother Clive, and sister Cori, in Winnipeg, MB. Robert Charles Geekie (deceased March 28, 2020) was her husband and partner in life for just shy of 50 years. While they both took joy in their children and grandchildren, they were each other’s unwavering safety and support.
She was fierce, adventurous, academic, and creative. Her tenacity, and her intellect perhaps defined her best. She was rarely a gentle wind, more like a gust with moments of typhoon.
Connie completed her nursing course at St. Boniface Hospital after high school. At the age of 50, having given up her education multiple times to provide support for her family, Connie returned to university herself - it was her turn to shine! She had, until that point, supported her husband and two children through their higher education. Completing her first undergraduate degree wasn’t enough, so she got another, then a master’s, and a PhD. Stories of those twelve years, where she possessed an unmatched vibrancy for life and a relish for learning, are retold within the family with almost legendary status. Her research and natural curiosity took her around the world, but it was the cottage in Gimli, MB, where she felt most at peace.
Polio and Parkinson’s both tried to slow Connie down in different phases of her life. She fought them both and didn’t let either define her. She was a nurse, an entrepreneur, and a university professor. She was a quilter, an avid reader, a photographer, a traveler, and a collector of pottery. Her four grandchildren perhaps brought her the greatest pride and joy over the last two decades, and through them, she lives on.
Connie was predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob) Geekie, mother Gladys, father Oscar, infant sister Patricia, brother-in-law Bill Geekie, auntie Joyce, and uncle Cubby. She is lovingly remembered by her son Kristjan (Shauna) Geekie, daughter Catherine (Yasuhiko) Takasugi, grandchildren, Taitt, Ayana, Teyla, and Atsushi; brother Clive (Rhonda) Hjorleifson, sister Cori (Colin) Dorrian, her nieces and nephew; great-nieces and great-nephews; and many extended family members.
In living memory of Constance Geekie, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.
