Quietly, on May 1, 2026, at the Simkin Centre, Toby Claire Schwartz passed away at the age of 93.
She was predeceased by her parents Anne and Morris Swartz and her husband of 48 years Harvey Schwartz.
She will be remembered by her children, Gary (Ann) Jeffery and Steven (Sharon), her grandchildren, Beth (Mike) Emma Jane (Scott) and Ellie (Evan), Madeline and Abigail (Eli), her Great-grandchildren Juno, Maeve, Harvey, Orly and Angus and her siblings Sidney, Harold (Rashi) and Paul (Lori).
Born and raised in Winnipeg, in her youth she was a swimmer and ballerina. She danced with the corps of the Winnipeg Ballet. She was a life-long patron of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Toby met Harvey Schwartz through high school and the YMHA and they married at the end of April 1952. They had three sons, Gary Jeffery and Steven. During their youth she was a homemaker who could be very loving and supportive.
Summers were spent in Gimli at Loni Beach full of special memories. Toby loved her grandchildren, who called her Baba and really enjoyed dressing up her granddaughters.
She had a love of jewellery and began a career in jewellery sales as her sons grew up. She worked at Ben Moss and Peoples Jewellery and more through this time in her life and she really knew her stuff.
Special thanks to those that provided care for her while living at the Portsmouth, Thorvaldson Care Centre and finally the Simkin Centre. In particular her friend Maria. Special thanks to her brother Sid who provided close care for her.
Toby will be remembered as a strong woman, with a will of steel, a mercurial nature, who always managed to find a way forward. May her memory be a blessing.
