Irene Esther Nuytten of Winnipeg passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026 surrounded by family after a long and well lived life.
Born on February 1, 1929 in St. Boniface, Irene was the beloved daughter of Ernest and Elvire Gysel. She grew up in St. Boniface and was educated at St. Joseph Academy. Upon graduation, she worked at several secretarial jobs ending her career at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate.
On May14, 1949 she married Eugene Nuytten at Holy Rosary Church and shared 70 years of marriage until Eugene’s passing on May 27, 2019. Together they built a loving family and created countless cherished memories.
Throughout their lives Irene enjoyed many happy times with family and friends at the cottage, in and around their home in Norwood, later at their condo in Fort Garry, and their winter home in Texas. She lived her last years in the warmth of the Seine River Retirement home.
She will always be remembered for hosting Boxing Day family events, Sunday suppers at her home on Chandos and at Booster Lake. In her free time, she enjoyed golf, lawn bowling, and playing Bridge. She loved language, was proficient in English, French, and Spanish and enjoyed activities that engaged her mind such as puzzles of all kinds.
She is survived by her children: Ernie (Regine), Louise (Bernie), Geoff (Val), and Isla (Doug); her nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by her lifelong friend Irene Millar as well as many other relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Eugene; granddaughter Natasha Fox; brothers, Albert and Marcel Gysel; and sisters, Irene Gysel, Jean (Buster) Markham, and Alice (Jerry) Dejonckheere.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at 10:00 am at Glen Lawn Funeral Home 455 Lagimodiere Blvd.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Manitoba Firefighters Burn Fund.
The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to the fifth floor staff at Victoria General Hospital.
Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of love and family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

I am so sorry to hear of Irene’s passing. She was a wonderful lady and an awesome mother. Condolences to Ernie (who sold us the house we now live in on Gilmore Avenue), Louise (one of my excellent Math students, Geoff (the most amazing Reach For The Top competitor on the long ago CBC Network) and Isla, a wonderful lady. I am sorry that I will be out of town the day of the funeral but I will be thinking about each of you and your Mom and praying for your families.
