Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOROTHY NIGHTINGALE
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy Nightingale. Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, William. She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Brian and Warren (Francelle); her sisters, Marion Kernested, Shirley Russell, and Linda Park; and her brother, Larry Yanke. She was also predeceased by her parents, Fred and Natalie ‘Tillie’ Yanke; her daughter, Arlene; and her siblings, Joyce and Marvin in infancy.
Dorothy will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. She had a calm presence that brought comfort to those around her, and a generous spirit that was evident in the many ways she cared for her family, friends, and neighbours. She found joy in simple pleasures: life at the lake, camping, gardening, and especially celebrating Christmas, a season she cherished and made magical for those she loved.
Growing up on a farm near Ashern, Manitoba, Dorothy developed a lifelong love of nature, animals, and the values of hard work and kindness. In 1960, she married William and moved to Balmertown, Ontario, where they built a loving home and raised their three children. During those years, Dorothy was an active member of the Red Lake Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and quietly dedicated her time to church and community, as well as working in schools as a custodian.
In 1989, William and Dorothy retired to Manitoba and spent the next 30 years enjoying life in Grosse Isle. There, Dorothy continued to nurture her creative spirit through drawing, painting, and writing poetry. She created breathtaking flower gardens that reflected her patience, creativity, and love of beauty.
More than anything, Dorothy treasured time with her family. Whether gathered around the dinner table, celebrating Christmas, or simply enjoying each other's company, those moments brought her the greatest happiness. Her warmth, quiet strength, and unwavering love will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Golden Door Geriatric Centre for their compassionate care, kindness, and support.
