DR. NEIL MARGOLIS

It is with profound sadness, and immense gratitude for a life so richly lived, that we announce the passing of Dr. Neil Margolis on July 1, 2026, just weeks shy of his 90th birthday.

Neil was born July 29, 1936 in Winnipeg to Doris and Hymie Margolis. Raised with his beloved sisters, Shirley and Liba, he spent his early years in Transcona before the family moved to Winnipeg's North End, where he forged lifelong friendships and developed a deep connection to the Jewish community.

One summer at Winnipeg Beach, Neil met the love of his life, Elaine. Their romance began with handwritten notes passed by his sister Liba and a first date to the movies, where Elaine was captivated by Neil's blue suede shoes - and the man wearing them. They married in 1959 and shared nearly 67 years of unwavering love, partnership, laughter, and devotion. Together they raised three sons and built a home filled with warmth, generosity, humour, and countless celebrations.

Neil graduated from St. John's High School before attending the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine. He completed his pediatric specialty training in Winnipeg and Cleveland, returning home to begin what became an extraordinary career spanning more than four decades.

Affectionately known to many as "Dr. Marvelous", Neil devoted his life to caring for children and their families. He practised pediatrics throughout Winnipeg, served for many years at the School for the Deaf, travelled to remote northern communities including Berens River, taught generations of medical students and residents, and helped develop the pediatric component of Manitoba's Physician Assistant Program. His compassion, kindness, and exceptional memory left a lasting impression on thousands of families. Even years after his retirement, former patients would stop him to say hello, and he often remembered not only their names but those of their siblings and parents as well.

Neil was deeply committed to public service. He served on numerous professional and community boards, including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, the Manitoba Medical College Foundation, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Talmud Torah, Rosh Pina Synagogue, Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, and later assisted Manitoba Public Insurance in assessing medical claims.

Beyond medicine, Neil embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He loved music, art, sports, travelling with Elaine, collecting sports cards and antiques.

Neil possessed a remarkable sense of humour and a generous spirit. He believed life should be celebrated, especially birthdays, which he marked with unforgettable parties, abundant laughter, and more than a few creative ways to ensure he received the most birthday cards.

Above all else, Neil treasured his family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, cherished brother, uncle, and loyal friend.

Neil was predeceased by his parents, Doris and Hymie Margolis; sister Shirley and brother-in-law David Permack.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Elaine; his three sons, Moish (Jodi), Aubrey (Kim), Evan (Elaine); his cherished grandchildren, Lindy, Kelsea (Brando), Shelby (Noah), Jessie, Isaac (Kristin), Lexi (Drew), Ezi; his sister, Liba (Tom); along with nieces and nephews, countless friends, colleagues, and generations of grateful patients whose lives were enriched by his care and compassion.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Neil's healthcare teams, whose compassion and extraordinary care meant so much to him and to all of us.

Donations in Neil's honour can be made to Elaine and Neil Margolis Family Endowment Fund at the Children's Hospital Foundation, Elaine and Neil Margolis Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.

He will be deeply missed

and forever remembered.

Condolences & Memories (22 entries)

  • I was sad to hear about Dr. Margolis' passing. My sister and I were both patients of his when we were young in the 70s. I remember his kindness and a gentle demeanor. He was always friendly and made me feel safe as a child when we'd see him. Years later my sister took her children to see him. And when I had my child in 2007 she told me he was still practicing. So I was able to take my son to him as well. I appreciated how he listened to my concerns as a parent and made sure that my son was referred to the right specialists, instead of being dismissive. It made all the difference for my Son, to this day. My condolences to family, friends and colleagues. The world needs for Doctors and humans! - Posted by: Silvia Buchanan (Former Patient) on: Jul 23, 2026

  • Sincere condolences to Elaine and family on Neil's passing. Suzanne du Plooy - Posted by: Suzanne du Plooy (Friend) on: Jul 20, 2026

  • There is lots I could write about Dr Margolis and memories I have him but my fave was when he appeared at the women’s pavilion to welcome our second son, Ivan into the world. This was in 2008 and 47 years earlier he welcomed me into this world.. to be a pediatrician for two generations of Frayers speaks volumes about how many people he left an impression on and how he cared for thousands of children and was so natural at it.. I’m glad I see his kids and his grand kids sometimes. He was an amazing physician but equally as wonderful as a father and husband. He will be missed. • As a toddler, Dr Margolis calmed me, reassured me, and laughed with me. Although it's been more than 50 years, I remember his kindness and care. How lucky to have been one of his patients. May his memory be a blessing. - Posted by: Angela (Former patient) on: Jul 14, 2026

  • It was always a very positive, charming experience for our daughters and their parents visiting Dr. Margolis. I knew they were in good hands and I get emotional thinking about it. He was definitely in the right profession. Years later I realized he likely attended to me as well in my younger days, as my primary pediatrician was Dr. McDonald. Definitely a contrast in manner and personality between those two! - Posted by: Jim Waite (Father of three female patients and likely former patient myself) on: Jul 13, 2026

  • Dr Margolis was an amazing pediatrician to my 3 kids who are now in their 40’s. They thought he was the greatest and as a mom he always had good practical advice for me. Sincere sympathy for your loss. Wonko family - Posted by: Margaret Wonko (Mother to 3 patients) on: Jul 12, 2026

  • I was a long time patient, as were my siblings. My Mom had a deep respect for Dr. Margolis. I even took my own children to him in years after. He was a kind and gentle man. He will be missed. - Posted by: Robert Bruce (long time patient) on: Jul 12, 2026

  • Dr. Margolis was my pediatrician in the 60's until early 80's. Was well liked by my whole family. Professional and compassionate care always. - Posted by: Brent Kasian (Patient) on: Jul 12, 2026

  • Somehow, in 1978 when our son was born, we were blessed to come under the care of Dr. Margolis as his paediatrician. Inexperienced as new parents, Dr. Margolis was the rock and support that guided us through the childhood illnesses of both of our children. He would say you know your child best, and if you are very worried about something, bring him or her in to see me. We are so very grateful for his kindness and care. We hold his memory in our thoughts. Shawn, Helen, Arlin, and Hana Axelrod - Posted by: Shawn and Helen Axelrod (Patients(our children)) on: Jul 12, 2026

  • Dr. Margolis worked with Lyle McDonald. When Dr. McDonald wasn’t free, I was able to see Dr. Margolis and without a doubt he was just the kindest best caring doctor I’ve ever seen. God bless him - Posted by: Darlene HENDLER (Patient) on: Jul 12, 2026

  • I was saddened to learn of Dr. Margolis's passing. Some of my early childhood memories are of visiting his office. My memories are hazy now, but what has never faded is how calm and kind he always was. He had a gentle, soothing voice, an easy smile, and a warmth that immediately put people at ease. As a child, I never feared going to see the doctor because of him. One story has always stayed with me. When I was about five or six, my mom would sometimes book an appointment for me or my brother's over something as minor as a runny nose. The real reason was that she wanted to see Dr. Margolis herself. She trusted him completely and valued his advice so much that she would find any excuse to make an appointment. Looking back, I think that's one of the greatest compliments a doctor can receive. He was a warm and reassuring presence throughout my early childhood, and I know my family wasn't the only one whose life he touched in that way. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Kade upton (Former Patient) on: Jul 11, 2026

  • We were so sorry to learn that Dr. Margolis has passed away. He was our sons' pediatrician and we always had complete confidence whenever we came in to see him, be it for regular check ups or an unexpected illness, that our sons were in the best hands. We trusted him completely! He was such a gentle person with our boys. Our sincere condolences to his family. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Sharon and Dennis McGavock (Parents of 3 sons who had Dr.Margolis as their pediatrician) on: Jul 11, 2026

  • To the Margolis family. I first heard about Dr. Neil through my old friend Sharon as Dr. Neil was her uncle. Then when my son was born and was so very ill it was Dr. Neil Margolis who was on call that weekend and the relationship between our son and family and Dr, Margolis was long going due to my son's illness. Dr. Margolis was the most caring person one could have ever met. His kind personality would always put our family at ease when explaining medical conditions regarding our son. We will never forget him or his kindness. We are so sorry for your loss. Sincerely - Bonnie Dyson and family - Posted by: Bonnie Dyson (my son was his patient) on: Jul 11, 2026

  • Dr. Margolis was my pediatrician for the first two decades of my life in Winnipeg. Regardless of the injury (hockey) or illness, real or otherwise, Neil was able to calm both patient and parent. Somehow he was always available, never too busy, and perpetually ready for a joke or minor mischief. I loved to embarrass my mother during visits to his office. Waiting for him to enter; I’d sit in “his” chair with my pleading mother unable to dislodge me. He would walk in with a knowing grin, never perturbed, and I’d respectfully return to my paper wrapped perch. Now 54 years old, when asked who my physician is I faithfully reply Dr. Neil Margolis - this will not change. Love and sympathy to the family and the countless patients who have been lucky enough to have Dr Margolis as their friend. Andy - Posted by: Andy Adams (Patient & Friend) on: Jul 11, 2026
