JANET MARION KUSHNERYK

(nee JAMIESON)

We are saddened to announce that, following a brief illness, Janet died on July 4, 2026, with her family around her. Janet is predeceased by her parents, Grace and Samuel Jamieson, and by many of her beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. She leaves her beloved husband, William Kushneryk, her three children Susan, Colin (Janna), and Tim (Lisa), and her grandchildren.



Janet was born March 12, 1945, in Halifax where her parents were supporting war efforts. Following her father's death in 1947, Janet and her mother returned to her mother's home in Winnipeg. Janet made wonderful, lifelong friends in Winnipeg's west end. Janet and her friend Mary Speirs spent an extraordinary few years travelling and working in Europe in the mid-1960s. Janet then returned to Winnipeg where she registered for some courses at United College, excelling in advanced math, and worked in the Manitoba Attorney General's office.



Janet married Bill on September 3, 1971, and her children were born in 1974 and 1976. Janet actively volunteered in the community through numerous organizations and projects, including the Junior League, Habitat for Humanity and others. Janet spent many years volunteering in various capacities at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, along with her other volunteer undertakings in the community. Janet joined the Reh-Fit Centre in her middle age and took up her time there with great enthusiasm, of course developing yet a new group of wonderful friends there. She and Bill lived for most of their married life in River Heights and Tuxedo. They had a wealth of friends across the city and across Canada and Janet treasured her time with them.



Janet was keenly and genuinely interested in people - from her family and close friends to neighbours and those more distant. She was interested in everyone's stories and welfare without judgment. She was incredibly caring and thoughtful. She was also amazingly strong in all senses of the word. Most of all, Janet was funny. Her dry humour and astute observations about the absurdities around us were enjoyed by all with whom she spent time.



Janet's family is grateful to the doctors, nurses and aides at the Grace Hospital for their care following her brief illness.



A service and reception celebrating Janet's life will be held on Wednesday, July 15, at 2:00 p.m. at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Grace Hospital Foundation.
