Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOYCE (FAIGIE) WAISMAN
Joyce "Faigie" Waisman was born in Winnipeg on March 17, 1930, the youngest child of Jenny (Gilman) and Louis Sedletsky. She grew up in Winnipeg alongside her siblings, Bert, Ruthie, and Morris. Significantly younger than her sister and brothers, Faigie was the beloved baby of the family. Her grandchildren knew her simply as Baba, a title she wore with enormous pride.
Faigie worked as a dental assistant before marrying Allan Waisman in 1950, after a romance that began when they noticed each other on a bus on the way to work. Allan was her soulmate, and together they built a family and a partnership that lasted 67 years until his passing in 2017.
Faigie lived a full and at times exciting life as a mother of four and partner to Allan. After moving to Vancouver, they spent many years travelling and hosting - with Faigie saying hello to every dog and baby encountered along the way. Still, she felt most content lost in a good book at home or providing counsel and a sympathetic ear to one of her children via a rotary telephone.
Faigie had a style all her own. Funny, opinionated, and endlessly curious, she had a way of making ordinary moments memorable. If there were spoons in the kitchen, she'd be drumming them. If she found a washboard, she'd be playing that too. Her laugh was contagious, and her outfits were as distinctive as she was, usually finished off with her signature bright red Reebok high-tops.
Living at the Weinberg Residence, she was cared for with extraordinary kindness by staff and companions who truly loved her and our family will always be grateful for the dignity, warmth, and love they showed her every day. She enjoyed immensely being outside in the garden and having her companions take her for walks in the neighbourhood.
Faigie was predeceased by her husband Allan, her parents, and her siblings, Bert Settler, Ruth Zoltok, and Morris Settler. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Sheera (Ari), Yail, Tully, and Dean (TC); her grandchildren, Aidan Docherty, Kelsey Docherty (Adam), Adlai, Oren (Joana), Cameron Waisman, Brynn Waisman, and Dylan Sunshine Waisman; and her great-grandson Lee.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce Faigie's memory may be made to support the Music Program at the Louis Brier Jewish Aged Foundation, which brought her great joy. Donations can be made online at: www.thelouisbrierfoundation.com/tributecards
Feisty, generous, and wonderfully herself, Faigie had a magnetic energy that drew people in. She leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and people who are better for having known and loved her.
