E. LAURA CUTHBERT Elsie Laura Cuthbert died peacefully in Grace General Hospital, Winnipeg on Saturday, October 2, 1999 following a succession of illnesses commencing in December 1995. Born September 7, 1909 in MacGregor, MB, she was the only child of the late Edgar Harold Nettleton and Lucy Sparrow Nettleton Thompson. She was educated in the public and high schools of Portage la Prairie where she met and married in 1931 the love of her life, Sterling Roy Cuthbert, then a young engineering staff member with the Manitoba Department of Good Roads (Highways). They were a fun-loving young couple with many friends and were seldom apart, even though he travelled extensively throughout the province. Shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War, Roy joined the Federal Department of Transport where he supervised the construction of several airfields throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba as part of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Laura travelled to all postings with her husband, and was his constant homemaker and loving source of companionship and support. Post-war, she and Roy lived in several communities with airports in Western Canada and Northwest Ontario, ending with his permanent appointment as resident engineer at the Winnipeg International Airport. They purchased their first home in the R.M. of Assiniboia and settled into a happy and productive life enjoying their home, gardening and socializing with family and friends. Roys brief illness and death in December 1970 broke Lauras heart, but not her spirit. She took up travelling with friends and visited regularly with her late sister-in-law Ella Mae (Cuthbert) Lyon and extended family in Portage la Prairie, Flin Flon and Winnipeg. She is survived by her niece Allison Mae (Lyon) Little (Keith) of Red Deer, AB; her nephew Sterling R. Lyon (Barbara) of Winnipeg and their families as well as cousins and old friends. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Grace General Hospital, Deer Lodge Centre, and Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts for their comforting care during her recent years of declining health. A service of remembrance will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue West, Winnipeg, MB on Wednesday, October 6 at 3:00 p.m. Rev. Robert Campbell will officiate. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who so desire may make donations in her memory to Grace General Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, R3J 3M7, Deer Lodge Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, R3J 0L3 or the charity of their choice.
