JOSEPH MAURICE LAFOND Peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2000 at the age of 82 years, Joe passed away at the St. Pierre Hospital. He leaves to mourn, his wife of 50 years Laura; his son Bob (Donna) two daughters, Vickie and Jennifer (Doug) and grandchildren, Danielle, Chantelle and Michael. He also leaves to mourn his sister Madeline Marsch (Lawrence) and his many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Esther and Louie; stepfather Jules and sister Mary. Joe was born on July 20, 1918 in Swan Lake, Man. Raised in Sperling, Man., and after many years of farming he moved to Winnipeg in 1950. Settling in Fort Garry, Joe worked in boat manufacturing while raising his family. In 1977 Joe and Laura relocated to Salmo, B.C., where Joe was employed by Cominco as a landscape groundskeeper. Returning to Winnipeg, following his retirement, Joe and Laura enjoyed many years at their beloved cottage at Winnipeg Beach. Joe loved the outdoors. Before the cottage, the family enjoyed years of camping, returning to many favourite spots throughout Manitoba, Canada, and the U.S.A. Joe and Laura particularly enjoyed an extended camping trip to Mexico in 1973. Gardening and fishing were other favourite activities - and the birds, squirrels and chipmunks never went hungry when Joe was around. Joe was a kind and gentle soul who loved spending time with his family. We all have special memories of camping, playing cards, singing and playing music, watching the Bombers or Canadians on T.V. or simply chatting. And of course checking the oil in the car!!! The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at the St. Pierre Hospital for their professionalism, caring and support over the last several months. You are indeed a special group of people. Thank you! If so desired, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Desalaberry Foundation, St. Pierre, Man. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m. in the Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons St. with viewing from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. Cremation to follow. Family and friends in attendance will be considered Honorary Pallbearers. The Desjardins Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 233-4949 or toll free 1-888-233-4949.
