DIAMANTINO MATIAS FERNANDES Suddenly on November 21, 2000, following a series of unexpected heart attacks, Diamantino passed away at the hospital in Tomar, Portugal. Diamantino was a devoted father and grandfather and will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Preciosa, his daughter Maria Cortez (Jose), and by his son Roger (Anna) and his four grandchildren Robert, Tania, Kyle and Chantelle. He also leaves to mourn his sisters Fernanda, Isaura and Ceu along with their families living in Portugal and France. He will also be missed by many friends and family members in Canada as well as overseas in Portugal. Diamantino was born on September 20, 1928 in Urqueira, Portugal. He later immigrated to France and then to Winnipeg in 1965. He worked for some years as a member of construction crews in Northern Manitoba. In 1967 he became part owner of the first Portuguese supermarket in Winnipeg. At about the same time he was an instrumental member and founder of the Portuguese Association of Manitoba. In 1975 he and his family bought Portuguese Fish and Food Market, which became a well-known hub for people of Portuguese descendent to shop. Soon after, he moved Portuguese Fish and Food Market to a bigger establishment across the street on William Ave. in Winnipeg. He owned and worked at his business until 1992 when he retired. He then travelled between his beloved retirement home in his hometown of Urqueira, Portugal and Winnipeg spending time with close family members in both places. Funeral services will be held on November 22 in Urqueira, Portugal and here in Winnipeg a Catholic mass will be held November 22 at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin St. with Fr. Jose Eduardo Medeiros presiding.
