Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMAN CALDWELL POWELL 1922 - 2001 Norman at age 78, died peacefully on March 6, 2001, at Arborg & District Health Centre with his wife Dorothy by his side. Norm was born November 16, 1922 at Qualicum Beach, BC and grew up in the Vancouver area. He served overseas in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War where he met his future wife Dorothy, also serving overseas as a Canadian Wren. Married in England November 11, 1944, they moved back to Canada and raised a family on the west coast. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Laura Powell and his brother Reginald; father and mother-in-law George and Elizabeth Thompson; brothers-in-law, Jack and Frank Thompson; sister-in-law Beth Thompson and niece Phyllis Burenski. Norm is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Dorothy; sons, Michael and Douglas (Dawn) daughter Judith and his beloved granddaughters, Elizabeth and Samantha; sisters, Lorraine (Geof) Daykin and Dorothy Burenski; sister-in-law Mary Thompson; brother-in-law Tom (Margaret) Thompson and many nieces and nephews. Norm and Dorothy moved to Gimli in 1973 when he was transferred, by the federal government, as chief excise officer for Seagrams distillery. Norm fell in love with the town and its people and decided to retire there. While living in Gimli he was actively involved in many community projects, one of his favourites being the Handy Van. Norm was a faithful member of St. Bartholomew Anglican Church and a member of Viking Lodge of Gimli. He will be missed. A Celebration of Normans life will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church, Gimli with Rev. K. Pawluk officiating. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at the Arborg and District Nursing Home and hospital for their love and caring. Flowers are gratefully declined. Should friends so desire, donations in Norms memory may be made to the Primates World Relief and Development Fund of Canada or a charity of ones choice. Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Gimli in care of arrangements.
