GREGORY PHILLIP STEVENS Gregory Phillip, born June 22 1905, passed away peacefully in Victoria on Remembrance Day, November 11, 2001. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 68 years, Gladys; their two children, Greg Stevens (Patricia) of Sidney, BC and Dianne McFadzean Morton (Ted) of Miniota, MB and their six grandchildren, Laura (Bill), Tom (Linda), Linda (Tom), Brad (Marlene), Kerri (Murray) and Craig (Michelle) and their 11 great-grandchildren, Malcolm, Duncan, Eric, Jared, Clay, Reka, Jesse, Reese, Jordan, Zoe and Nevada and the extended family of Ted Morton. One of five sons who voluntarily served their country in the Second World War, Captain Stevens, RCA 1939 to 1946, who returned to a sales career, began a new adventure at age 57 when he joined the Prairie Provinces Forestry Association in 1962 and later the Alberta Forestry Association. For 21 years Greg, as Smokey the Bear and Gladys as Bertie Beaver, travelled across the prairies speaking to more than 600,000 children, teachers, parents and other adults about conservations, the forest and the need for its protection. Driving a truck, hauling a trailer or being hauled in a forestry conservation railway care over thousands of miles of rail or pavement, gravel, mud and streams, they survived many highway hazards, flipping over once, and three train wrecks. He received numerous awards, including the Alberta Achievement Award, the Alberta Teachers Associations Environmental and Outdoor Educations Merit Award, the Calgary Board of Educations Lamp of Learning Award, and was the first Western Canadian to receive the Tourism Industry Association of Canada Governor Generals Conservation Award in 1983. Special thanks and appreciations to Doctors How and Tamboline and their staff and to the wonderful and loving care and support of the staff at Oak Bay Lodge in Victoria and Beechwood Village in Sidney. At Dads request, his family will share a private celebration of his life. No flowers please. Cards would be welcomed by Gladys Stevens, 283 Oak Bay Lodge, 2251 Cadboro Bay Rd, Victoria, BC V8R 5H3.
