MANUEL NOZICK (1915-2001) Manuel Nozick passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 with his family by his side. He is lovingly remembered by his wife and life partner for 62 years, Anne; his children, Michael (Cheryl), Robert, and Marcia; his grandchildren, Jennifer Ritter (Alan), Kim Korbin (Adam), Joshua, Holly Steele and Jacob Steele; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Dolly Goodman Silverman and Mary Nozick. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Anne Nozick; and his brothers, Roy and Alan. Manuel was born in Edmonton in 1915 and moved to Winnipeg as a child where he grew up in the North End. He graduated from St. Johns High School and completed one year University with honours. With the onset of the Great Depression he was unable to continue his education. To help his family, he went to work for his grandfather and uncles as manager of Nozick Commission Co. In 1943, he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. After the war, he and his brother Alan formed their own wholesale ladies wear company, Nozick Bros. Ltd., where he worked for 40 years. For the last 30 years, he and his wife spent their winter holidays on Singer Island, West Palm Beach where he made many new friends and was lovingly known as Manny. He took particular pleasure in organizing the weekly condo golf competitions and enjoyed playing small stakes poker and backgammon with the gang. When Manny and Anne sold their condo this year, Manny was given a tribute dinner by his friends and golf buddies to show their affection and appreciation for his efforts over the years. Manny was an outstanding golfer. He started playing at age 11 and was a municipal champion. He was one of the founding members of Glendale Country Club, where he was club champion for several years. Manuel was also an active member and past president of the Montefiore Club. Most of all Manuel will be remembered as a gentle, humble man of integrity, a person who put others ahead of himself, a kind and generous man who gave so much to his family and friends. He loved to tell stories, sing songs to his grandchildren, and play poker, bridge and golf with his buddies. Everybody adored him. Manny loved people. He listened well and he was a great conversationalist. As a businessman, he and his brother built their business on fair dealing and trust. A handshake was all that was needed to conclude a deal. He was held in the highest regard by customers and employees alike, many of whom remained his personal friends until his death. He was a loving husband and a doting father and grandfather whose greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren. The funeral was held on December 13 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. Active pallbearers were Jacob Steele, Joshua Nozick, Adam Korbin, Stanley Nozick, Barton Rossen and Michael Rossen. Honorary pallbearers were Barney Cohen, Sam Arenson, Mel Leonoff, Mel Swartz, Barry Kaufman, Elvin Linder, and Teddy Jacobs. Whoever wishes may make donations to the Anne and Manuel Nozick Fund, care of Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, 477-7525.
