Date of Passing: Feb 04, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOLLY SILVERMAN GOODMAN It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dolly Silverman Goodman on January 4, 2002. Born Dora Rossen, she was the second of Joseph and Masha Rossens five children. She was nicknamed Dolly by her grade one teacher, and the name stuck since it suited her so well. Hers was a long and full life well lived. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Rita Shapera Jacob (Ted), Sheila Linder (Al), and Gerry Silverman (Gail) nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, sister Anne Nozick; sisters-in-law, Gloria Yuffe and Ruth Brickman; numerous nieces and nephews. Dolly was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Izzy Silverman; by her husband of 16 years, Jack Goodman; siblings Fanny Kaufman, Robert Rossen and Allyn Rossen; and son-in-law Monty Shapera. Dolly loved life and she loved people, and people were drawn to her magnetic personality. She was an excellent cook and baker who never used recipes. Dolly was offered a scholarship to study classical piano in Los Angeles, which she declined because she met Izzy. The fantastic stories of her life entertained her children and grandchildren, and we never tired of hearing them. Dolly was a vivacious beauty whose fashion sense was obvious to the end of her life. She was never old, no detail ever escaped her and she was always interested in the lives of her family and friends. Dolly was happiest when surrounded by family at Shabbat dinners. Her grandchildren were her biggest fans, and she was theirs. She was proud of their accomplishments and prouder of her great-grandchildren. Baba Dolly danced at the weddings of eight of her grandchildren, and lived to see the bar and bat mitzvahs of three great-grandchildren. An ardent Zionist, Dolly was a charter member of Queen Esther Chapter and a lifetime member of Hadassah WIZO. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the Misericordia Hospital for over 25 years. Dolly was unique, larger than life, one of a kind, and her presence warmed every room she entered. A loyal friend, loving sister and sister-in-law, devoted mother and doting grandmother, she will be missed. Burial took place on Sunday, January 6, 2002 at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery with Rabbi Neal Rose officiating. Her grandchildren Nolan Shapera, Blair Shapera, Faith Kaplan, Nadine Short, Marshall Linder and Ron Silverman served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Ted Jacob, Al Linder, Barry Kaufman, Michael Nozick, Barton Rossen, Robert Nozick, Hart Kaplan, and George Goodman. The family would like to thank Dr. Tam, and the staff at the Health Sciences Centre, Ward GD5. The family particularly thanks Eppy for her outstanding care and compassion. If so desired, donations may be made to Youth Aliyah c/o Winnipeg Hadassah WIZO, or to a charity of ones choice.
