Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE (JURIJ) HWOZDULYCH Suddenly at the Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, January 3, 2002, George Hwozdulych passed away at the age of 81 years. George was born in Malyj Bereznyj, Carpathian Ukraine on February 27, 1920. While still a student in Uzhorod, he participated in the defence of his homeland as a member of the Carpathian Sich. Although trained as a teacher, he was forced by the circumstances of war to leave his homeland and never return to his vocation. He, his wife and infant daughter spent several years in Europe in refugee camps, while he worked for the United Nations Refugee Organization in Austria. Having arrived in Canada, he immediately became involved in the Ukrainian National Federation, Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and Plast. From the early 1950s he travelled throughout Canada organizing branches of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee, as a member of the National Executive. He was active in the Ukrainian Canadian Congress for over 40 years. He was a member of Striletska Hromada; a board member of Carpathia Credit Union and Kalyna Co-operative, former member of the Koshetz Choir, and for many years served on the executive of the Ukrainian World Congress. He participated in the first Convention of the Ukrainian World Congress in New York City in 1967, and was a great supporter of all Ukrainian causes. He was a member of the O.U.N. and the Olzych Foundation in Canada. He received the Taras Shevchenko medal from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress for his long standing work in the community. He was a member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral since 1950. One of his greatest pleasures was to see his homeland Ukraine gain independence. He was fortunate enough to travel twice to Ukraine in 1991 and 1997 and re-establish contact with his six sisters and two brothers in Zakarpattia. Until his retirement, he worked at Carling OKeefe Brewery. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Alexandra; daughter Larysa and son Boris. In Ukraine he leaves to mourn his passing five sisters and two brothers and their families.
