JOHN PETER FRIESEN 1904 - 2002 Peacefully, on Wed-nesday January 9, 2002, at Bethania Personal Care Home, John Friesen passed away at the age of 97 years. John leaves to mourn his passing, his children, Peter John (Joyce) of Victoria, BC, John (Edith) of Leamington, ON, Oscar (Jacqueline) of New Westminster, BC, and Irene (Evan) MacKenzie of Winnipeg, MB; nine grand-children; numerous great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and special cousin Lori Tuz and family. He was predeceased by his wife Apalona of 67 years, in 1995, and his sister Lena in 2001. Dad immigrated to Canada from Europe in 1924 with his mother, three sisters, Olga, Jenny, Lena, and his first wife Margreta. After working in Toronto, Morden and Reesor (Northern Ontario), he settled in Winnipeg in 1932 with his family and second wife Lena. He worked as a carpenter and was active in the construction industry until his retirement. He was a life member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and received his 60 year membership pin in 2001. Dad was dedicated to his family and took special pride in his home. He was known as the Tomato King and spent many hours nurturing his garden and yard. Dad was a special person and always had a kind word or a ready compliment. His sociable and outgoing nature was his trademark. Mom and Dad were long-standing members of McDermot Avenue Baptist Church and had many friends in the church family. In March, 1998, Dad moved into Bethania Personal Care Home where he resided until his death. We wish to extend our thanks to the caring staff at Bethania for their willingness to assist Dad in so many thoughtful ways. Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 12 at 9:30 a.m. at Klassen Funeral Chapel, 1897 Henderson Highway, with interment to follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Viewing prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Bethania Personal Care Home, 1045 Concordia Ave., Winnipeg, R2K 3S7 or McDermot Avenue Baptist Church, 821 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, R3E 0T8 would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.
