FRANK ARRAS MAYHEW Peacefully, following a lengthy illness, it is with sadness that we announce the passing on Monday, January 21, 2002 of Frank Arras Mayhew, aged 84 years, at the Deer Lodge Centre. Frank will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis; children, Shirley Clair, Graham Mayhew and Diane LeClair (Al) grandchildren, Kevin McDonald, Leah Moreau (Gil), Lisa, Rachel and David Mayhew, Steven and Sara LeClair; great-grandchildren, Daniel McQuarrie, Dustin and Devon McDonald, Jason Moreau and Emily Mayhew. He will be remembered, overseas, by his brother Norman Mayhew; sister Peggy Turner and many nieces and nephews in England. He was predeceased by his mother Emily Mayhew and brother Raymond of England. Frank was born on April 12, 1917 in Bungay, Suffolk, England. He apprenticed as a butcher from the age of 12 and continued his occupation until immigrating, with his family, to Winnipeg, Canada in 1957. He proceeded with his career in Winnipeg, working as a Meat Department Manager for Canada Safeway until his retirement in April 1982. Frank was called to service in July, 1940, during the Second World War. He served as a Gunnery Sergeant in the British Maritime Anti-aircraft Regiment. He was in charge of anti-craft guns on board several ships, protecting convoys to various destinations. While on a convoy to Russia he suffered the loss of his left eye on July 2, 1942, but continued service in a training capacity until leaving the Military in May, 1946. During most of his life he had a great love of gardening and a passion for flowers. After his retirement he continued his hobby and could be found much of the time in his heated greenhouse. Retirement also gave Frank time to enjoy his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance will take place on Friday, January 25 at 10:30 a.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St., with Rev. Don McIntyre officiating. Urn Placement will take place in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum. Special thanks go to the staffs of St. Boniface Hospital, Misericordia Interim Care, West Park Manor and Deer Lodge Centre. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Frank Mayhew may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 2H8 or to a charity of their choice. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I remember Frank quite well. When I was a part time food clerk during holiday relief during the summers and during university, I met him. He was the meat manager at the Osborne and Kylemore store. We shared many coffee and lunch breaks together. I found out that he lost an eye in the war. He ran a good meat counter for if you didn't you, were no longer manager. I remember Frank when I think back to my Safeway days. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Colin Dederick (Safeway collague) on: Mar 02, 2020
