Don was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children Betty. He leaves to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory his wife Shirley (her mother, Anne "Mom"), son Graham, daughter Kendra (Jon) Olsen and their children, Keaton and Trent; sisters, Joyce, Mickey and Mary and their families all of Ottawa; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and good friends. Don was born on October 29, 1927 in Ottawa. After coming to Winnipeg he founded Atlas Paving in 1967 and was a successful entrepreneur. Over the years he avidly enjoyed being a Shriner. He taught himself to play the trombone in his forties and he joined the Shriners Orchestra in Winnipeg serving as president for a term. Later, he joined the Shriner Bedwin Band in Texas, while enjoying his winters there. He also found time to transport underprivileged children between hospitals in both Mexico and Houston. Don will be remembered as an accomplished Billiards and Darts player. He was an avid curler and was a longtime member of the Charleswood Curling Club. He was also an extremely good dancer and enjoyed the time spent playing the washboard with "The Music Men" in Texas. Don raised his two children with joy and spent many weekends with his family at the family farm in Teulon. As he got older he enjoyed his winters in Texas. Don found pleasure spending time with his grandchildren at the farm. He also enjoyed gardening and flowers and had an excellent touch around a barbeque. Don was a genuine person who was extremely loving and devoted. He always made people feel comfortable and was able to befriend most. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dons memory to the Manitoba Lung Association 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3A 2H8 as tokens of remembrance.
