PHYLLIS PEACE WESTON (BASTABLE) (GARRAWAY)
Date of Passing: Feb 19, 2002
Offer Condolences or MemoryPHYLLIS PEACE WESTON (BASTABLE) (nee GARRAWAY) Suddenly on Tuesday, February 19, 2002, our dear mother, grandma and wife left us to go back to Heaven. Mom is survived by her husband Art; children, Sandra (Zane) Lewkiw, Terry (Jackie) Bastable, Liz (Garry) Cullingham, Danny Weston (Nancy) and Judy (Bob) Campbell. Also missing her are grandchildren, Michael (Cindy), Sean and Marcy Lewkiw, Vernon (Karen), Brett Bastable, Sherry, Erin and Elaine Cullingham, Heather and Shannon Campbell; and one great-grandchild Dillon Bastable; and sister Marjorie Lynch; sister-in-law Leslie Garraway; and sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Keith McRae. She was predeceased by her first husband Vern Bastable; sister May Tulloch; and brothers, Cecil Baker and Ron Garraway. Phyl was born November 11, 1918 at exactly 11:00 a.m. as the church bells were ringing to announce that peace had been declared. Raised in St. James, she met and married Vern Bastable and had three children. Vern, an Air force pilot, was lost to her in a tragic post-war jet crash. She later married Art Weston, settled in St. James and added two more children to the family. After many happy years together, Mom and Dad celebrated their 50th anniversary September 2001. Mom worked for several years at Eatons and Sears and finally ended her working days at Assiniboine Clinic. Before the days of silk flowers, she was renowned for her artificial flowers, corsages and centrepieces. All the children remember the family room floor being littered with bright papers, ribbons and glitter. Mom enjoyed all aspects of crafting, knitting and crocheting. She was a member of the Ladies Guild of St. Davids Presbyterian (now known as St. James Presbyterian Church) and served in many other capacities as a church member. Phyl and Art enjoyed many trips worldwide - a particular favourite being Hawaii, which appealed to Moms love of beauty and nature. Closer to home they enjoyed many years of relaxation (toil) at Gull Lake, usually surrounded by friends and family. Everyone who knew her will remember her humour, generosity, and love of family and friends and will especially recall her sweet smile. For the past three years, Mom and Dad resided at Catherine Place in St. Boniface. Our family would like to express our appreciation to staff and homecare providers for the kindness and warmth that were extended. A funeral service will be held to honour Moms life on Monday, February 25 at 2:30 p.m. in St. James Presbyterian Church, 1476 Portage Ave. (across from Polo Park), with the Rev. Beth McCutcheon officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of ones choice. "Mom, we shall miss you so terribly."
