A. LILLIAN SMITH Peacefully on March 7, 2002 at the Gladstone Hospital, Lillian Smith, widow of David Edward Smith passed away at the age of 87 years. She was born on July 24, 1914 at Elie, MB. Her family moved to Waterhen, MB where she grew up and went to school. She married David Smith in 1933 and after two years teaching in rural schools, Dave and Lil returned to the Smith family farm at Gladstone in 1935. Lillians primary interests were always her home and family with gardening and flowers bringing her a great deal of joy. She truly had a green thumb. Her family will always treasure her handmade quilts, needlepoint, afghans, and ceramics that she made for each of them. Lil was a life member of the Livingstone WI and an active member of the Gladstone UCW for many years as well as serving with the Agricultural Society. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, David Smith, in January 1994; her parents William and Delia Bass; sister Lulu Berg; brothers, George, Frank, John, Bill, Ray, Virden, Earl, and Charlie Bass. Lillian is survived by two daughters, Marie and Ernie Dukquits of Amherst, WI and Dorothy and Richard Rudd of Winnipeg; three special granddaughters, Leigh and Don Gray of Winnipeg, Lynette Dukquits of Sturtevant, WI, and Cathy and Tom Cyrof Dauphin; also four great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Megan, Breena, and Zachary. She is also survived by two brothers, Victor and Hilda Bass of Meadow Portage, MB and Jim and Louise Bass of Piney, MB; and brother-in-law Lloyd and Lil Smith of Winnipeg; as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 11 at 1:00 p.m. in the Gladstone United Church, Gladstone, MB with Rev. Blair Whyte officiating. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or to CancerCare Manitoba. Clarkes Funeral Home, Gladstone in care of arrangements.
