GERMAINE (MARIE-ANNE) CARRIERE May 28, 1921 - March 23, 2002 Germaine Carriere was born in Otterburne on May 28, 1921. She was a member of a large family. Her father Charles-Henri Carriere predeceased her in 1965 and so did her mother Arline Laroche in 1947. Four of her six brothers (Charles, Ernest, Victor and Arthur) and her Sister Irene of a Montreal religious order, two brothers-in-law, Armand Courcelles and Jim Klassen predeceased her. Her surviving brothers and sisters live in various areas of Canada and the U.S.A. Paul (and his wife Gabrielle) in St. Boniface, Emile (and his wife Pamela) in Auburn, CA. Her sisters, Leonne Courcelles of St. Boniface, Evelyn Klassen of Edmonton, Jeannine Carriere also of Edmonton and Simone (and her husband Andy) Hoglund of Vernon, BC. She also leaves four sisters-in-law, namely Melina Desmarais-Cote (Charles) of St. Boniface, Celine Courcelles-Carriere (Ernest) of St. Pierre, Therese Bertrand-Carriere (Victor) of St. Malo and Rita Chartrand-Carriere (Arthur) of Regina. At the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Roberval, QC, Germaine acquired her nursing training in the early 60s. She then flew towards the Northern Lights (in Moosenee and Attawapisquat between 1965 and 1970) where she started to establish her reputation as a dedicated, competent and audacious nurse. She travelled by hydroplane, by skidoo, by canoe and by train to be near her patients. She happily assisted many young mothers in their childbirths. Upon her return to Roberval in 1970 she decided to settle there to become the nurse that so many residents of the Lac St. Jean Region came to know. She was assigned to many departments of the hospital including the psychiatric ward. Unfortunately for her patients, she retired in 1985. This retirement did not slow her down much, as she continued to care for terminal patients as a volunteer, until 1995, when she finally started to rest a bit more. She lived in Roberval amongst many Laroche relatives and friends. If you walk around the City of Roberval you can easily witness how her warm influence was appreciated. Prayers will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons St. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5 at the Saint-Viateur Roman Catholic Church in Otterburne, MB, with Fr.
