MARY PETRACHEK Peacefully, on March 24, 2002, Mary Petrachek, aged 93, of Winnipeg, passed away. Mary was born on October 27. 1908, to Paul and Annie Kuzie of Cooks Creek. She had five siblings; John, Harry, Walter, Roman and Olive, all of whom predeceased her. Mary married Emil Petrachek in 1928 and had one child, Emil, affectionately known as Sonny. Her husband passed away in 1957 and Mary moved to Los Angeles where she lived for over 20 years. In 1980, Mary moved back to Winnipeg to care for her mother who died in 1986 at nearly 97 years old. Mary was a pioneer member of the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Cooks Creek. She was a current member of St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church in West Kildonan. Mary delighted in serving the Lord and enjoyed the fellowship with other church members, especially the children. Children were very important to Mary. Her son, Emil, was the light of her life. Emil (Sonny) married Iris Pawloski in 1955 and soon Mary had three grandchildren. Eventually, Mary was blessed with five-great-grandchildren in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and in turn, their children and the children of dozens of close friends across Canada and California. Indeed, there were many, many children of all ages who, throughout their lives, tenderly knew Mary as Grandma. Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. prior to prayers. Prayers will be held on Sunday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, April 1 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Josephs Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Ave. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery.
