ETHEL AGNES HOWIE MAZUR (nee AULD) 1903 - 2002 Ethel Mazur passed away of old age on March 25, 2002, at Pembina Place Personal Care Home (The Deaf Centre). When her parents, James and Helen Auld, were on their way from Glasgow, Scotland, to Saskatchewan (then the North-West Territories), Ethel interrupted their journey by deciding to be born in Toronto on October 18, 1903. Ethel, the second child in a family of six, grew up in the now vanished coal mining town of Taylorton, near Estevan, SK. She attended the Black Diamond Public School and Estevan Collegiate. In 1926, she married Winnipegger, Stanislaus Mazur. In 1928, the two moved to Rycroft in Albertas Peace River country where they remained until 1941 when they came to Winnipeg. They bought a home on St. Marys Rd. in St. Vital. When their two daughters became teenagers, Ethel took a job in Eatons Mail Order where she worked for some 25 years. A mere five days before her death, she was reminiscing about her beloved Eatons. Ethel loved sports. As a girl and young married woman, she played hockey and baseball. She was especially skilled at badminton and also loved to curl. She was still cheering hockey during the Salt Lake City Olympics being especially thrilled with the womens gold medal. But, above all, she loved to shop even though she was known for her frugality. Long after she was no longer able to go to malls and stores herself, she kept track of the prices of every available item and product. She had lived at the Deaf Centre since 1994, first in a small apartment, later in the Personal Care Unit. Her last few years were spent in a wheelchair, but, despite failing physical health, her mind remained intact until the last few weeks of her long life. She remembered the sinking of the Titanic, the First World War, the 1918 flu epidemic, the advent of cars, telephones and radio to Saskatchewan. But she grew weary of lifes burdens and was very ready to leave this world. Her feisty heart gave up on March 25, 2002. She is survived by her two daughters, Jean Gagnon (Barney) of Huntington Beach, CA, and Kathy Teillet of Winnipeg. She leaves the following grandchildren, Rik Gagnon (Karen), Jim Gagnon (Tina), Bill Gagnon (Teresa), Charlotte Heinrich (Allen), Mona Winokur (Russ), and Nadine Sullivan (Mike), all of California, and by Dan Teillet (Brenda Kustra) of Ottawa, Jean Teillet (Ed Henderson) of Vancouver and, in Winnipeg, Mike Teillet (Sandy Ellis) and John Teillet (Irene Hanuta). She also leaves seven great-grandsons and eight great-granddaughters as well as two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, one granddaughter and by her beloved husband Stan (1970). A private family interment has already taken place. There will be a memorial mass at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Stafford & Corydon, with Father Peter Monty, s.j. presiding. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Personal Care Home, especially to Bozena, Graczina, Alice, Irma, Marie, Paulette, Colleen, Sheila and Robert. Special thanks to Sr. Olivine Fiola, m.o., the Catholic Chaplain, and to Kathy the night nurse who were with her when she died. Jessie, the Protestant Chaplain, was also a great comfort to her. Go with God, little mama. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, memorial gifts may be made to St. Benedicts Foundation, Inc., 225 Masters Ave., Winnipeg, R4A 2A1.
