ALBERT (BERT) JOHN HALL On April 7, 2002, Bert Hall passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 89. His passing is mourned by his brother Charles of Winnipeg; sisters-in-law, Jessie Galaugher of Winnipeg and Tommy Crerar of Victoria; his children, Joan (Stewart) Thorniley, Dave Hall and wife Barb Remnant of Kamloops, and Sue (Dennis) Peters of Cache Creek; grandchildren, Dione Bruno, Scott Thorniley, Evan and Heather Hall and Mike and Alana Peters; great-grandchildren, Michael and Brandon Bruno and Zach Thorniley; and by his many nieces, nephews and friends. Bert was born in Winnipeg on August 18, 1912. He lost his mother to influenza in 1918 and was raised by his father Edward and later his stepmother Martha. Like many of his generation, much of his young manhood was spent in work camps and riding the rails in search of work. He worked at Canada Bread from the late 1930s until 1967, rising to the position of plant superintendent. In 1940, he married Jean Crerar and they remained soulmates until her passing in 1994. In 1969, Bert and his family moved to Kamloops, operating the Tilden franchise until retirement. In recent years he was an active member of the White Cane Club where he found new friends and hours of enjoyment. His last months were spent with his daughter Joan Thorniley and her husband Stewart. With help from the rest of the family, they provided a loving and caring home until his death from cancer. Grandpa Great loved camping, gardening and family and was blessed with many happy years of enjoying them. A hard-working man, he took pride in meeting responsibilities with integrity. He was also a kind man who loved to sing, argue politics or share laughter with family and friends. A good man and a loving father, he will be sorely missed. Dad asked that special thanks be expressed to the home care nurses whose compassionate support allowed his last days to be spent as he wished - with family. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the Schoening Funeral Chapel, 513 Seymour St. Kamloops, BC. If friends desire, donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, 101-635 Victoria St., Kamloops, BC V2C 2B3 in memory of Bert would be appreciated. Service arrangements entrusted to Schoening Funeral Service, telephone (250) 374-1454.
