Date of Passing: Apr 10, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNORMA JOYCE MITTERNDORFER (BREITENBACH) 1933 - 2002 Peacefully, surrounded by family, Norma passed away at the age of 68 years at the Grace General Hospital on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 5:30 p.m. Norma will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her son Charles; daughter Cindy and partner Chantal; sisters, Bernice Smith (Clifford), Shirley Lalchun (Bill) and Yvonne Hughesman (Doug) and numerous nieces and nephews. Norma was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Charlie Breitenbach; and her husband Wilf. She was born December 12, 1933 in Lanigan, SK. Norma grew up on the family farm in Jansen, SK until the family moved to Winnipeg at the end of the Depression. In her early 20s, she travelled to Vancouver where she met and later married Wilf on August 31, 1957. In 1959 they relocated to Winnipeg to start a family. Norma started working as a Teachers Assistant with the Winnipeg School Division No. 1 in 1971. She worked in various schools including Tec Voc, Ashland, Victoria Albert and Wellington. She then returned to Victoria Albert where she worked primarily with nursery students for the last 16 years of her career. She was dedicated to her job and rarely ever missed a day of work. After 25 years of service Norma retired in 1996. Upon her retirement Norma relocated to the Courts of St. James where she was able to participate in many of her favourite activities including going out with friends for coffee as well as group outings. Recently Norma enrolled in aqua size and computer classes. She also volunteered her time at the local seniors centre. Norma will be fondly remembered for her three greatest passions: butterflies, jigsaw puzzles and figure skating. Although Normas battle with cancer was brief, her sense of wit and spirit remained undeniable, endearing herself to her health care team and those who loved her. She passed over on her own terms. She did it her way! Normas funeral service will be held on Monday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m. in Deer Lodge United Church, 2093 Portage Ave. at Belvidere Street, with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. A private family interment will be held in Brookside Cemetery. Our family would like to thank the Grace General Hospital, Dr. Kotecha and all the wonderful nursing staff for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Normas memory to the establishment of the Butterfly Garden at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory. Cheques may be made to the "Friends of the Assiniboine Park Conservatory" (Butterfly Conservatory), 15 Conservatory Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3P 2N5.
