MARIA KATHERINE HOTZ (nee BERZISH) With her family at her side, Maria passed away at home on April 15, 2002. Maria is survived by her husband Joseph, son Ken, daughter Karen, son-in-law Carmine; grandchildren, Emma, Gabriella, Paolo and Mia; daughter Christine, mother Katherine, brother Thom (Dawn) and nephew Murphy. She was predeceased by her father Andrew (Henry). Maria was born in Winnipeg on December 14, 1946, and grew up in the North End and West Kildonan area. Her 37 year marriage to Joseph began on February 27, 1965 and her focus soon turned to raising her family. Maria worked part-time in the cash office at Sears Garden City for 27 years. She was very dedicated to her work and gained many friends and acquaintances during her working years. Maria took interest and pleasure in many activities around the house. The household books were kept organized to a tee. Her kitchen was always in full swing with homemade baking, jams, and pickles always in abundant stock. Her cultural heritage was maintained though the preparation of various traditional dishes, yet she equally enjoyed dabbling with new recipes. Many a meal included ingredients from her well-tended vegetable garden. Another important part of her daily routine was caring for her dogs, Missy and Barney. To Maria, her family was the biggest part of her life. Family camping trips and vacations were always met with fun and adventure. She encouraged and supported her children through numerous activities and interests. As her children grew older, she took great pride in their education and careers. Her adventuresome spirit was again realised during several vacations to exotic locales with her husband. Later, her caring nature was further expressed through her active role as a grandmother. Maria was a very loving and caring person. Her fighting spirit and selfless character were a constant inspiration to us and continued through her last days. Besides being a dedicated wife and mother, she was also our dear friend. She will always be in our hearts and souls. We love you very much. The family would like to thank Emma, her home care worker for the past two years, and the staff of St. Boniface Cancer Centre. A memorial service, with reception to follow, will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. 338-7111. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or CancerCare Manitoba.
