Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTEFAN CHOMTSCHYN It is with deep sorrow that the family of Stefan Chomtschyn announces the sudden passing of their beloved husband, father, and Dido on April 28, 2002, Palm Sunday according to the Eastern rite. Stefan was born in the village of Kopanj, oblast Lviv in Western Ukraine on January 7, 1920. He was predeceased by his parents, Wasyl and Olena; and his eldest brother Mykola. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Efrosina (Rose) his daughters, Olia (Roman) and Oksana (Orest) and his grandchildren, Larysa, Katja, Mark, Natalka and Olena. Sharing their loss are his brothers in Ukraine, Dmytro and Bohdan; and his sister Sophia, with their large extended families of Stefans nieces and nephews. Stefan was taken from his homeland in 1941 as a forced labourer to Gottingen, Germany. Here he met and married Efrosina. In February of 1950, they arrived in their new homeland, Canada, with their young daughter Olia. Shortly after their arrival they faced the Great Flood of 1950 and Stefan sought work in logging camps in the Lac du Bonnet area. He eventually joined CP Rail and spent 28 years there, first as a section man, and later as a machinist at the Weston Shops. His life was governed by his love for God, his family, homeland and nature. Stefan retired in 1982. His love of nature dominated his retirement years. He spent endless hours in his garden and with his flowers, and was already preparing seedlings for the coming garden season. He spent many days at the cottage. He was a life long member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, Plast pryjat, Ukrainian Reading Association-Prosvita and Oseredok. In 1983, Stefan visited his beloved Ukraine and was reunited with his siblings at his ancestral village. He celebrated the declaration of the independent Ukraine in 1991, and yearned to travel there once again. He taught his family the love of two lands and two cultures and for this we are grateful. The family wishes to thank Winnipeg Fire and Ambulance for their rapid response, emergency staff at Seven Oaks General Hospital, and Rev. M. Kouts for rushing to our sides and administering last rites. Prayers will be sung at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., with Rev. M. Kouts officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Help Us Help the Children, 2118-A Bloor St. W., 2nd Floor, Suite 200, Toronto, ON, M6S 1M8 or to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation.
