DONALD WILLIAM SMITH April 16, 1916 - May 1, 2002 With sad hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend at the Grace General Hospital, peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Gwen; children, Donna High (Don), Joan Fenton (Neil), Susan Misko (John), Lyn Book (Marc), George Smith (Irene) and Diane Smith-Hayward (Rick) grandchildren, April (Richard), Theresa, Dan, Stacey, Jason, Erin, Lee, Kelsie, Kendal and Haley; great-grandchildren, Melissa and Christopher; brothers-in-law, Ted and Lloyd; and many nieces, nephews and their families. Don was predeceased by parents, Catherine and George; siblings, Eileen (Elof), Jack (Louise), Margaret (Joe), George (Yvonne), Jean (Lionel), and Alice (Jack) niece Gloria, and great-niece Michelle; sisters-in-law, Elsie (Wilbur) and Merle. Don was born and raised in Winnipeg. His career took him to Bissett and Flin Flon, where he met the love of his life, Gwen Massey, whom he married in 1944. They raised six children. He enjoyed the great outdoors - boating, fishing and swimming; teaching his children as they grew. He was a mans man and enjoyed the friendships made on hunting and fishing trips. He would like to have been a full-time Angler. In 1960 he was transferred to Winnipeg with Midwest Diamond Drilling and settled in St. James with his family. Don retired after 25 years of service. In later years he enjoyed speeding on his scooter, taking in the neighbourhood. His love of family and his stoic character carried him through the good and bad times. Don had a great sense of humour. We would like to sincerely thank the staff and volunteers of the Palliative Care Unit who were so compassionate and caring and who took the time to make sure Don was always comfortable and content. We the family, are very grateful to you and to all the family and friends who have seen us through this time. We finally learned the full extent of what Dons love has meant and realized how great it has been to have a husband and father just like him. "We cant stop missing you." In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Grace Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB, R3J 3M7. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2400 Portage Ave., on Monday, May 6. A celebration of life will follow in the church basement. A private family interment will take place. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CEMETERY AND CREMATORIUM 885-9715
