ARNI RAGNAR GILLIS 1911 - 2002 Arni was born on October 9, 1911 in the Icelandic community of 1-6 to Jon and Anna Gillis. He died peacefully at Boundary Trails Health Centre on May 2, 2002. Arni is survived by his wife Olive of 62 years; two daughters, Sigrid and husband Glen Hunt of Darlingford, Sally-Anne and husband Bob Gibb of Toronto, ON; son Robert and wife Kathy Gillis of Lockport; grandchildren, Rodney and wife Maggie Hunt, Ryan and wife Dana Hunt, Scott and Chad Gillis, Christy and Matthew Gibb; great-grandchildren, Brock, Bryce, Russell Hunt, Matthew, Janaya Hunt. In 1932 Arni graduated with a three year Diploma in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba and was awarded the Governor Generals Medal. Arni and Olive farmed in the 1-6 area until 1960 and then moved to Morden where he retired in 1976 from the Morden Research Station. Retirement years were spent in Morden. Arni gained the respect he had in the community not by receiving from others, this respect was his reward for what he had given to others all of his life. He had a knack for adding a little something to the life of everyone he met. Funeral service will be held Sunday, May 5, 2:30 p.m. at St. Pauls United Church, Morden, Jeri Bjornson officiating. Interment will follow at the 1-6 Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 1-6 Community Hall or to the Legion House Walkway Fund, C/O the Town of Morden.
