GEORGE ROSS 1919 - 2002 George passed away on April 28, in Oliver, BC, where he had resided in recent years. He leaves to mourn his passing, sisters Muriel of Barriere, BC, Audrey of Winnipeg, and brother Alex of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his father George in 1930, mother Lillian in 1966, sister Evelyn in 1982, and brother Leslie in 1998. George enlisted in the Royal Air Force prior to the Second World War and served with distinction in the European Theatre and Iceland. In 1940, George was aboard the troopship "Lancastria" in the harbour of St. Nazaire France being evacuated, when it was attacked and sunk by enemy aircraft. With the loss of 3200 lives this is still considered the second worst maritime disaster in the world. He survived by swimming to a British Destroyer. After his discharge from the R.A.F., he lived in Wales for several years before returning to Canada where he and his family lived in several locations, finally settling in Oliver, where his time on this earth ended quietly. He will be sadly missed. A private family service will be held for him at a future date.
