Dad died on August 28, 2002, at the age of 80, after a courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Agnes of 56 years; daughters, Brenda (Lorne) Barske (Kevin and Blair), Barbara Finnon (Scott and Ainsley Kuypers). He is also survived by sister-in-law Mary Studenka (Brian) the McLeod family of Claresholm, AB (Jack, Bev, Cameron and Allana) and the Brown family in Innisfail, AB (Tom, Diane, Bonnie and Denise). Dad was born in Calgary, AB on October 3, 1921. He was a proud veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Navy as a submarine detector on the north Atlantic. On May 24, 1946 he married Agnes McLeod and together they moved from Calgary to Winnipeg. Dad was employed from 1948 to 1961 by the C.P.R. in the mail and baggage department. In 1961 he resigned from the C.P.R. to become the general manager of the Airline Credit Union. He retired from the credit union in 1981. Dad was an active participant in life. He was a devoted family man and a compassionate friend. He volunteered in countless ways and had time for everyone. It was an honour for him to call all members of Fidelity Lodge No. 146 his brothers. He was a mason for 50 years. During this time he served as a Worshipful Master, District Deputy Grand Master and Grand Director of Ceremonies. For 20 years dad drove cancer patients to and from their many appointments, and each year, acted as Santa at the annual Christmas party for children with cancer. Dad could always bring a smile to the faces of otherwise very sick kids. Dad enjoyed curling with the Fort Garry Curling Club from 1981 to 1995. He continued to visit his old friends at the rink even after he was unable to curl. He died with a positive outlook on life, with courage and with dignity. He died, loving and appreciating his family, and was deeply loved and appreciated by them. At dads request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 31 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). Interment will take place in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the reception centre.
