Date of Passing: Aug 27, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALYSSA IRENE STEVENSON It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of our cherished Alyssa on August 27, 2002, at 24 years of age, at the Health Sciences Centre. She leaves to mourn her passing her mother Elaine; father Rick; brother Derek; sister Jynene; grandmother Ruth, Cory and special friend Terry. Also left to mourn are her loving aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and her beloved pet "Kermie." Alyssa touched the lives of so many people. Although she struggled with her own eating disorder for over 11 years, she was always willing to do whatever she could to help others. She talked publicly about her battle in the hopes that her experiences would help others to overcome this debilitating illness. Her courage under great adversity was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Alyssa was a bright, articulate and beautiful person. She grew up loving all sports. She was particularly passionate about fastball, playing on teams for Sir John Franklin, River Heights, Smittys Terminators and the Maples. In more recent years, music, movies, crossword puzzles and her stuffed animal collection brought her many hours of enjoyment. Alyssa attended Robert H. Smith, River Heights and Kelvin High School. Over the years many wonderful teachers reached out to help Alyssa. Our family wishes to express their gratitude to the City of Winnipeg paramedics and fire department and the Emergency and MICU staff at Health Sciences Centre for their valiant efforts, compassion and kindness. In particular, we wish to acknowledge and express our familys appreciation for the care and support given to Alyssa over the years by Dr. Maureen Collison, Dr. Susan Collison, Dr. Debbie Lindsay, Dr. Jule Henderson, Kim Andries, Karen Dana, the Lions Club of Winnipeg and all the many wonderful health care providers at Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospitals. We have also been deeply touched by the overwhelming love and support of our families and friends. A celebration of Alyssas life will take place on Saturday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Bedes Anglican Church, 99 Turner at Mount Royal, with the Rev. Jamie Howison officiating. An interment and reception will follow at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alyssas memory to the Eating Disorders Association of Manitoba, Inc., P.O. Box 34099, RPO Fort Richmond, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 5T5. We know youre smiling down on us from Heaven Eventually we will be together One sweet day.
