HELMUT MASKUS 1923 - 2003 Peacefully and with dignity, Helmut, aged 80 years, passed away with family by his side on October 16, 2003 at the Riverview Health Centre after a courageous battle. He grew up on the family farm in Namslau, Germany. After the war, he settled in Hamburg, Germany where, in June 1949 he married his loving wife of 53 years. In 1953 he immigrated to Winnipeg with his family, where he worked in the construction industry until his retirement. He was a quiet and caring man with a great love for hunting, gardening and the outdoors. He is survived and sadly missed by his wife Hedwig; and his sons, Werner (Debbie), Erwin (Edith), Rolfe (Virginia). He was the dearly loved grandfather of Russell, Heather and Nancy, Melissa, Breanne and Lisa. He will be remembered fondly by his brother Martin; his sister Emily in Germany; along with all his nieces, nephews and friends. In his final days, he was cared for with great compassion and dignity by Dr. Crow and the wonderful staff of the Riverview Health Centre (Palliative Care Wing) 3 East. Your compassion and caring was absolutely the best. Words cannot express how grateful our family is to you all. Thank you. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, ON1160 - 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
