Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGERTRUDE HOMMEN On Wednesday, February 23, 2005, Gertrude Hommen passed away at the age of 85 years. Left to mourn are the caring staff at Beacon Hill Lodge and her dear friend Mirleen Kittle. Gertrude was born June 14, 1919 about 10 miles from Cut Knife, SK. She was predeceased by her parents, Andres and Johanna, who emigrated from Stavanger, Norway, and by her sister Inga (1917-2002). Gertrude and Inga came by train to Winnipeg to find work after their late parent's farm became too difficult to maintain. She found work at Winnipeg General Hospital, eventually taking the position of Nurses Aide in Gyne O.R. at the Women's Pavilion. She delighted in talking politics or current affairs with the nurses and doctors, when not busy cleaning O.R.'s or autoclaving bundles and instruments. Inga looked after their apartment on Sherbrook Street, while Gertrude worked. They did a lot of knitting for friends at Women's Pavilion and for the Red Cross. Every fall for many years the students at Salisbury and River Elm schools had mitts donated by Mirleen, courtesy of the Hommen sisters. After Inga's sudden death, Gertrude's health declined, but she still enjoyed listening to C.J.O.B.'s Peter Warren, or watching sports on TV. Her wish to be cremated was honoured and she will be interred with her parents in Cut Knife Cemetery, N.W. Saskatchewan. Arrangements entrusted to: GLEN EDEN FUNERAL HOME 4477 MAIN STREET 338-7111
