ELEANOR SMITH 1928 - 2005 Peacefully, Eleanor Emmaline Smith, surrounded by close family, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at the Riverview Health Centre. Eleanor leaves behind four sons, Russell, Terry, Greg and Tim; eight grandchildren, Earl, Shanna, Holly, Christopher, Brent, Jeremy, Jillian and Sarah; three great-granddaughters, Christine, Amber and Janine; and her brothers, Russell and Tom. She was predeceased by her husband Earl and younger sister Joan. Eleanor was born in Sturgess, SK to Emma and Syd Ellis and came of age in Seven Sisters Falls, MB. There she not only met her future husband Earl Smith but also made lifelong friends with Joy Moore and Irene Hill who have remained by her side through the years. It is testimony to Eleanor's giving nature that her friends and family have stayed so close to her through all the changes in her life, that support was especially evident over the past few months. Eleanor lived for her children and her grandchildren and she will always be remembered by us as a loving mother and grandmother who doted on her family, supported and fostered the dreams of her kids and grandkids and who was always there to lend an ear or offer some gentle advice. She was a care giver at heart who spent many years as a nurse and always played a support role when family members required care or attention. She was a constant companion for her mother in her later years, stood by her father's side when he was sick and volunteered to be the primary care giver when her sister was struck by cancer years ago. 'Mom' was a special person who had the uncanny ability to connect with people right away, could always remember someone's name even though she had only met them once and always made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. She loved music of all kinds but had a very special soft spot for Johnny Cash and was always very interested in the musical interests of her kids and grandkids, from hip-hop to Beethoven. She will be missed by all but will leave a lasting legacy of love and caring for our extended families. Thanks Mom, we couldn't have done it with out you. A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held on Thursday, May 5 at 3:00 p.m. at Glen Eden, 4477 Main St. Donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

  • I am Irene Hill's daughter's lifelong friend. Irene is Eleanor's lifelong friend. Eleanor was always at Irene and Kelly's house while we were growing up. I remember Eleanor to be a kind hearted, funny, friendly, wonderful person. She always knew how to make us feel special during those really hard teen years. Being the mother of 2 teen daughters myself I appreciate her kindness and understanding even more. I was deeply saddened to hear of Eleanor's illness and passing. My condolences go out to her family and close friends as she will be missed. - Posted by: Sheila Smith Horwood (Acquaintance) on: May 04, 2005
