Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOLGA KUSIE (nee STECIUK) November 23, 1921 - July 8, 2005 Peacefully, with her family by her side, Olga passed away at the Health Sciences Centre, on Friday, July 8, 2005, at the age of 84 years. She leaves behind her three sons, Phil (Sharon and Joshua) and grandchildren, James, Jennifer (Everet) and Constance; Ted (Irene) and grandsons, Michael, Daniel and Stefan; David (Grace) and granddaughter Kassandra; nephew Bill Steciuk and family in Kelowna; and niece Patsy Munton and family in Vancouver. Olga was predeceased by her husband Phillip; her parents, Ignatius and Lucia Steciuk and her brother Bill. Olga was born in Winnipeg, received her education in Phoenix School, West Winnipeg and completed her high school in Morris, MB. She completed her Secretarial Course at Success Business College and a two year Nursing Course. During the war years, she worked as a secretary at McDonald Bros. Aircraft (now Bristol), while evenings and weekends, she was a Red Cross Nurse at the Deer Lodge Military Hospital. After the war, for a short time, she worked as a secretary to the Registrar of the University of Manitoba and until her marriage, she was secretary to the Minister of Mines Resources and Immigration. After her marriage, she worked for Head Office of Western Grocers and at St. Joseph's Hospital, in the evenings, in charge of Emergency. After her children were born, she entered Teacher's Training receiving her Manitoba Teaching Certificate; her Business Certificate from Bradley University of Illinois and her certificate to teach slow learners from the University of North Dakota. She went on to her Bachelor of Education Degree at the University of Manitoba. She taught high school at Windsor Park Collegiate, R.B. Russell School and Adult Evening Classes for 21 years at Tec Voc High School. Olga took a deep interest in her community. She was on the Board of Directors of the CNIB, where she taped many stories for blind children. Olga was on the Board of the Society for Crippled Children and Adults and on the Greater Winnipeg Day Centre Board. She continued on the Age and Opportunity Board of Directors, chairing the Day Centres Committee. She served two terms on the Winnipeg Police Commission. Olga was president of the Toastmasters Club and a Donor Member of the Manitoba Theatre Centre and Symphony Orchestra for many years. She also did work with the I.O.D.E., the Monarchist League of Canada and was a daily hello to many people. Very proud of her Ukrainian heritage, Olga participated a great deal in the Ukrainian Community and the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. She served as President of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral and President of Winnipeg Region. Olga served on the Executive of the Canadian Ukrainian Committee and the Women's League of Liberation. She was instrumental in organizing the St. Vladimir Museum of Ukrainian Church and Cultural Artifacts and served as curator for many years. Olga loved to sing and was a member of the St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral Choir and a founding member of the O. Kosetch Choir. She was a parishioner of the cathedral all her life. In compliance with Olga's wishes, Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m.in Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral Ukrainian Catholic Church, 114 McGregor St., with Rev. Fr. Nestor Yakiwchuk officiating and assisted by Rev. Deacon Michael Woroby. Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery, 4535 Main St. Our family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Concordia Hospital and the Holy Family Home, as well as, the doctors, nurses and medical personnel at the Health Sciences Centre, who attended her with humanity and sensitivity.
