MILDRED ARMINA JOHNSON (Nee EADY) Born October 21, 1916 in Kenora, ON. Died September 2, 2005 in Penticton, BC. From the time she was a little girl, Mildred was known by everyone as Mick the nickname given to her by her father Richard Eady. The family grew up in Sioux Lookout, ON where Mick and her brothers shared their dad's love of the lake at their front door. Mick married Claude Carrothers, a railroader like her dad, and the two of them spent countless hours fishing and exploring the hundreds of lakes around Sioux Lookout. Mick was every bit as comfortable portaging a canoe through the bush as she was in her living room at home. The arrival of their son Kenneth didn't change this, and from the time he was two weeks old, the three of them were a regular fixture on the lake. In 1954 Mick and Claude moved to Fort Frances, ON and later to Winnipeg, MB. It was there that Mick began working for the Department of Northern Affairs, frequently travelling to the isolated northern and arctic settlements to escort Aboriginal and Inuit children to Winnipeg for medical treatment. After being widowed in 1978, Mick met J. Kingsley (King) Johnson and the two of them were married in Winnipeg in 1980. For several years, Mick and King spent their summers in Perrault Falls, ON and wintered in Key Colony Beach, FL, before retiring to Penticton in 1986. Mick was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge from 1940 to the mid 1990's, looking after the Penticton IOOF hall for many years. Illness forced Mick to move to the Penticton and District Retirement Centre in 1998, and later to the Westview Residence of Penticton Regional Hospital where she passed away peacefully. Mick was predeceased by her husband John Kingsley (King) Johnson; brothers, Daniel, Raymond and Douglas Eady and sister Nell Hunt (Eady). She is survived by her sister Ermyl Emiry (Eady) of Winnipeg; son Kenneth Carrothers of Penticton; grandsons, Michael Carrothers of Kamloops and Christopher Carrothers of Penticton and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements in care of EVERDEN RUST FUNERAL SERVICES, 250-493-4112.
