BORDEN S. (BUD) DACKIW On September 16, 2005, Borden peacefully passed away with his family at his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was in his 69th year. Borden leaves to cherish his memory his beloved family, wife Ethel, son Alan, daughter-in-law Elizabeth, grandchildren, Julia and Benjamin; son Steven; and daughter-in-law Marni. He was Uncle Bob to Cathy, Jackie, and Linda (Ed). Other much loved family include sister-in-law Anita McCann, nieces, Dale (Keith), Karen (Edward), Diane (Ken); nephew Gary (Jenna, Sean); sister-in-law Margaret Chase (Ken); nieces, Stacee (Tayler) and Kyla. Brother-in-law Bert and family also survive. He enjoyed a special friendship with Merv and Claudette Sul and their family, the Kidd family, and Al and Walda Bosiak. Borden was predeceased by his infant son Robert, his parents, Paul and Antonina; brother Pete; sister-in-law Ruby; brother-in-law Ward McCann; and his father and mother-in-law, James and Margaret McCann. Borden was born in Winnipeg February 22, 1937. He was always very proud of his Ukrainian Heritage and his North End roots. He and Ethel were married August 9, 1958 and enjoyed 47 years of marriage. Borden's working career was spent in the natural gas industry. He retired from Centra Gas formerly the Greater Winnipeg Gas Company and ICG in 1991, after 37 years of service. He had many long lasting friendships from his years at the gas company. His sons, Alan and Steven were Borden's life. He was very involved in their education and activities, coaching various teams, encouraging and supporting them every step of the way. He was so very proud of them. Their wives became his daughters, and his love for his grandchildren who affectionately called him Grumpy was unequalled. A high point in Borden's life was in 2001 when he and Steven travelled to Ukraine and Poland to search for family. Cousins were located and a memorable visit was enjoyed by all. He participated in many projects throughout his life and was totally committed to their completion. In the 1960's Borden sat on the North Kildonan Parks Board and he was President of the River East Royal Knights Hockey Club in l983. His passion was his cabin. It was a labour of love and where he wanted to be as much as possible. Borden and his brother Pete were instrumental in the development of Pickerel Lake and he actively pursued improvements to The Lake through the years. Borden had a very strong work ethic, was dedicated, loyal and honest, all of which he taught by example. We will love and miss him forever. Our sincere appreciation and gratitude is extended to Dr. Justin Wong for his exceptional care of Borden and concern for our family. Thank you also to Dr. A. Maksymiuk and Marilyn Bruce of CancerCare Manitoba. Special thanks and recognition to all the nurses and staff on 3B and 4H at the Health Sciences Centre. Your care and compassion went above and beyond! A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg, Rev.
