GORDON ROBERT HORNER July 30, 1934 - September 19, 2005 It is with deep sadness, but with wonderful memories, we announce the passing of Gordon on Monday, September 19, 2005 at the St. Boniface Hospital following a lengthy illness. He leaves to mourn his brother Bill (May); niece Lori Lanthier (Jess); and nephew Bill Jr. (Veronica) (Marissa and Kayla); sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sanderson of Calgary, Shirley Phizacklea in Winnipeg and brother-in-law Alan Phizacklea in Winnipeg and many other nieces. Gordon was predeceased by his loving wife Joan of 33 years, his mother and father, Mabel and Bill and his mother-in-law, Lillian Phizacklea. He was employed with the Canadian National Railways and spent 35 years working in the Freight Sale Department in Winnipeg where he met his wife Joan, and many cherished friends. He retired in 1988. Gordon grew up in Elmwood and spent many hours around the Kelvin Community Club. He was an accomplished athlete in his younger days, excelling in both lacrosse and hockey. He had a lacrosse stick in his hands at six years of age and played through bantam and senior leagues. He played hockey for various teams in Elmwood and throughout Winnipeg City from a young lad until middle age, when a hip injury terminated his playing days. Gordon was faithful in caring for his mother-in-law Lillian, both in his home and in Golden West care home. Lillian accompanied Joan and Gordon on many wonderful trips to Australia, Hawaii, Europe and throughout Canada and the U.S.A. Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses in the dialysis unit and the intensive care of the St. Boniface Hospital for their excellent care and also a very special thanks to the nurses and staff on floor six of the Deer Lodge Centre for their compassion and wonderful care given to Gordon. Also special thanks to his coworkers and many friends who were so faithful to visit Gordon during his illness. A service in honour of Gordon's life will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Saturday, September 24 at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow. Cremation has taken place and a private family burial will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations will be kindly accepted by the Kidney Foundation Manitoba Branch or a charity of one's choice. JOAN AND GORD TOGETHER AGAIN Thomson Funeral Home 669 Broadway 783-7211

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Ed called me this evening to say that Gordie had passed away and since I am able to access The Free Press on line in Nanaimo, I immediately wanted to read his obituary. Gordie and I weren't long time friends but we did share many wonderful conversations on all subjects including how much he missed Joan. The last line said it all 'Joan and Gord together again' ... I truly believe that that is so. My condolences to all the family and especially to Bill and May who supported Gord so faithfully throughout his lengthy illness. - Posted by: Betty Upsdell (Friend) on: Sep 27, 2005

  • May Gordie be at peace.... - Posted by: robert and maggi o'dowda (Acquaintance) on: Sep 25, 2005

  • I wish to extend my deepest Sympathy in the loss of Gord. My last husband, Dave and I spent so many fun times with Gord and Joan in Winnipeg before we moved to Edmonton but did attend their wedding where Dave was an Usher. Gord called me many times when Dave was ill with cancer in 1992 and when my Mom died 4 years ago Gord came to the funeral-we shared tears and laughs that day - a visit I will treasure. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Audrey Tibbs - Posted by: Mrs. Audrey Tibbs (Friend) on: Sep 22, 2005
