MARY LENA CHALMERS (nee JOHNSTON) July 30, 1908 - September 21, 2005 Mary Chalmers died peacefully on September 21, 2005 after a short illness. Mary was born at Deloraine, MB, where she lived during her early years, met and married William (Ted) Chalmers and gave birth to their first child, Joan. In 1933 the family moved to Winnipeg where she resided for the rest of her life. Mary and Ted had three more children, Barrie, William (Bill) and Mary Anne. Mary's life was devoted primarily to her family, but she loved playing bridge and other card games as well as knitting and crocheting. She spent many years as a volunteer and after Ted's death began a new career at age 65 as director of recreation at Tuxedo Villa. After retiring from there, she worked at The Good Old Days tea room on Sherbrook Street until its closing. Mary was predeceased by her husband Ted; and daughters, Barrie and Mary Anne. She is survived by her daughter Joan (Harry Hartley) and her son Bill (Merle), nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, her sister Marjorie Hemsworth and her brother Arthur Johnston. There will be a memorial service at the Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, on Saturday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at Deloraine Cemetery, on Monday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
