Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALBERT ERNEST CUMBERS April 9, 1923 - September 26, 2005 Suddenly but peacefully with his family by his side, Albert Ernest Cumbers passed away at Victoria General Hospital at the age of 82. Albert is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Joy Evelyn (nee Evans), his brothers, Jack (Ruth) and Sid Cumbers, his sons, Murray (Nancy), Alan (Debbie) and Ernest Jay (Shelli), his cousins, Muriel (Maurice), Dorothy Cumbers and Betty Todd, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elisha, Christopher, Michael, Nicholas, Stephanie, Andrea and Jenna and numerous friends. Albert spent 44 years as a machinist with the Canadian National Railway, retiring in 1985. He served his country in the Second World War, stationed in England with the Canadian Air Force. He spent more than 50 years as a brother of the Ancient Landmark Lodge. He was Past Patron of the Jubilee Chapter of the Eastern Star, and spent 14 years with the Navy League of Canada and over 10 years with the Donelly United Cubs, running the movies for the kids at the church on Saturdays. Albert was never happier then when he was puttering in his workshop, particularly when he was crafting one of his famous watches. Always the first to lend a hand or come up with a solution, Albert spent most of his summers up at the ever-growing cottage at Star Lake and winters travelling the world with Joy. He especially loved travelling to Mesa, AZ. Albert's love of trains extended past his work and he crafted model trains, his finest being the Countess of Dufferin trains, which he hand-crafted from the original blueprints. One of the trains is on display at the Via Rail station in downtown Winnipeg. The family would like to thank the kind, loving and patient staff at the Victoria General Hospital, in particular the Intensive Care Unit staff. The family also sends its heartfelt thanks to Chaplain Helen Manfield for her love, prayers and comfort during Albert's final hours. Funeral arrangements have been made for Donnelly United Church, 1226 Waller Ave., for Thursday, September 29 at 1:00 p.m. A private family interment will be held prior to the funeral at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to make a donation on Albert's behalf, please do so to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2H8.
