BETTY EVELYN BIDDULPH On Thursday, September 29, 2005, Betty passed away at Misericordia Health Centre at the age of 86 years. Mom is survived by her four children, Judith Persad, Nancy Norris (Bob), Valerie Kor (Bouko), and Barry as well as her grandchildren, Charis, Carly, Lindy, Robby, Cody, and Tyler; sister-in-law Mildred Graham and best friend Marie Jupp as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Betty was born August 19, 1919 in Winnipeg to Winnifred and Philip Wilks. She grew up in the Riverview area and attended Rupertsland School - now known as Balmoral Hall. After graduation she studied nursing at the Children's Hospital. As a young adult she was involved in St. Alban's young people's club, and made many lifelong acquaintances there. This is where she met her future husband Harold. Betty and Harold were involved in the war effort; Dad as airforce ground crew and mom as a wireless operator. It was on a short leave in December 1943 that they married. They celebrated 58 years together. Mom lived in several homes in Fort Garry and East St Paul. Each home was lovingly renovated by Harold; and every move involved the uprooting and relocating of mom's rose bushes (last count 180). Mom was always active in the Anglican Church; first at St. Alban's, then St. Paul's Ft. Garry, and most recently St. Catherine's, Birds Hill. At St. Catherine's Mom was significantly involved in renovation and restoration of the little church and hall; as well as active in the prayer groups, committees and Alter Guild. Her love of horses began early in her life. Betty did show jumping and dressage with her horse Dainty. She excelled at the sport and won many awards. Due to her father's untimely death she was forced to give up her riding and her horse. It was not until she moved to the country in 1968 that mom realized her dream of owning horses again. This passion she passed on to her daughter and granddaughters. It wasn't merely horses that mom loved; as many dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, rats and fish called her place home. Her passion was however, her roses. She learned her knowledge and love of roses from her mother, Winnifred MacDonald. Together they were members of the Winnipeg Horticultural Society and Canadian Rose Society for many years. Betty followed in her mom's footsteps to become a life member of the Winnipeg Hort. This knowledge she passed on to her daughters as well. Betty's funeral service will be held today, Monday, October 3 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Catherine's Anglican Church, 3202 Birds Hill Rd., Birds Hill, MB. Special thanks to the staff at Misericordia Personal Care Home on Furby Street, where mom has resided on Rose Walk for the past two years. Their care and attention to all her needs was outstanding. She was so fortunate to have been entrusted to their care. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Give me a rose when I'm lonely Give me a rose when I'm blue, Give me a rose in the early morn Still wet with Heaven's dew Give me a rose when I'm happy, Give a rose when I'm gay, Give a rose kissed by the sun, To lighten the cares of the day Give me a rose when I'm aged Give me a rose when I'm gray, Give me a rose from your garden fair To cheer me along my way. Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I was Betty’s goddaughter and my parents named me for her. I hadn’t seen or been in contact with her for decades since I moved to Vancouver. I vividly recall her and her horse Dainty and the myriad ribbons and trophies that they won being displayed in a huge case in the big entrance hall of the house she lived in with her mother and her brother Barry and their amazingly clever dog Gypsy. Betty was my idol when I was a little girl and I am honoured to have been named after her. - Posted by: Betty Roberta Phillips (Goddaughter ) on: Feb 22, 2023
