Al was born near Clair, SK in 1919. After schooling, he worked on a farm and moved to Regina. He joined the armed forces in 1940 and after basic training, moved to Brandon, MB for advanced training as a gunner in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces. Al served in Canada and overseas, returning home because of ill health. After six months of recovery, he moved to Moose Jaw where he enrolled in trade school and graduated as a machinist. He began his career in a machine shop in Regina and then joined the plumbing department at Marshall Wells Company. In 1970, he was transferred to Winnipeg and retired in 1984 after 40 years with the company. For 25 years, Al was involved in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (M). He enjoyed gardening, curling, lawn bowling and Sunday church services at St. Bede's, especially coffee time afterwards. After retiring, Al and May enjoyed travelling across Canada, the British Isles and United States. Al was predeceased by his wife May, in 1997, after 47 years of marriage and his sister Nellie in 2001. To mourn his passing, Al leaves his daughter Mary (Grant) Blakely of Fox Creek, AB; son David (Nancy) Richards of Winnipeg; and grandchildren, Matthew, Katherine, Carly, Scott and Garrett; his brother Joe (St. Catherine's, ON); and sister Doris (St. John's, BC). The family wishes to extend many thanks to the staff at the Grace Hospital for the care Al received during his many stays in hospital the last few years.
